About me

About Me
My name is Judy O'Brien. I am a fully qualified Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and Registered Member of The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

It is natural that everyone will experience times when they feel sad, angry, despairing, anxious or stuck in a rut. These are normal reactions to those life events which can cause distress.

However, if negative feelings and emotions begin to dominate your life and you feel unable to function well enough, then it may be the right time to consider seeking the help of a counsellor. I provide a supportive, confidential service in  a non-judgemental, accepting space to enable you to explore personal issues, past experiences and difficult relationships.

My counselling rooms are in Chorlton and Wilmslow, and I can also offer telephone sessions or work with you online.

Counselling can be a demanding process. It can feel uncomfortable to talk about feelings and emotions, explore difficult relationships or recognise repeated patterns of behaviour. However, by examining every piece of the jigsaw that makes up you and your life, counselling may may help you to gain a better understanding of reasons behind how are feeling, quieten your inner critic, help you find balance and better ways of being to enable you to move forward.

My Approach
I work primarily in a person-centred way, but draw on other approaches including Psychodynamic, Compassion-focused therapy, Gestalt, and Inner Child work. This enables me to tailor therapy to meet your specific needs to help you make sense of how you are feeling, and facilitate movement towards enhanced emotional wellbeing and more effective personal choices.

Together we can make sense of the difficulties you are experiencing through a trusting, safe therapeutic relationship. Often just saying “it” out loud and being heard, can make a huge difference to how you feel. I can help you reach a deeper understanding and acceptance of who you are, uncover reasons behind the way you feel, increase self-awareness bringing more effective personal choices.  I welcome you just as you are.

Getting Started
Keeping it together can be challenging at times. No one is immune to the difficulties life throws their way. When things get tough, life can become overwhelming. Reaching out for help takes tremendous courage and commitment. Valuing and investing in yourself will allow you to work for the changes you want to make in your life.

Once you have made contact with me via telephone, text or email, we can discuss if, and how we might work together.  My answerphone is completely confidential, I may be with other clients when you call, so please do leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Member organisations

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.

Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.

All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

My Motivation

People are individuals who have had life experiences often beyond their control that have shaped them in unique ways. None of us chose our genetic make-up, or the environment we grew up in, which can affect the beliefs we hold about ourselves and have an impact on driving distress.

Reaching out for support takes tremendous courage and a commitment to invest in yourself to work towards the positive changes you want to make in your life. Keeping it together can be challenging at times. No one is immune to the difficulties life throws our way. My motivation to support you as a therapist comes from my genuine interest in you and your life experiences. I appreciate the deep connections made with my clients together with the humbling privilege of sharing what it means to be human in a therapeutic relationship.
