About me

I am a Counsellor, Psychotherapist & Clinical Supervisor. Specialising in Men's Issues, Sexual/Abuse & Trauma, Worrying Sexual Interests, Pornography Issues, LGBTI (particularly Trans issues), assertiveness, low self esteem and Group work. I'm also currently a tutor in Counselling & Psychotherapy at both Edinburgh University and Edinburgh FE College.

I work with men, trans men and trans women. I have previously worked in therapy and supervision for a number of agencies including MankindUK, Sussex Probation, Brighton University, Brighton and Hove Council and Sussex Men's Counselling (my own practice).

Although non-religious, I also worked with survivors of Clerical Abuse (sexual abuse by priests and religious leaders) and members of the clergy requiring therapy.

I believe that clients should have results in therapy and so I strive to keep the work gentle and nurturing but also focussed on the client's goals. If through serious illness or disability, you are unable to travel to me, in certain circumstances I can, subject to agreement, visit you at home for therapy. I try to make counselling affordable to all clients and offer a number of low-cost daytime sessions.

I offer therapy and supervision to corporate organisations such as charities, social organisations, counselling agencies and statutory bodies e.g. local councils, health boards etc.

I also provide therapy groups for people struggling with their past or current sexual behaviours and groups for survivors of sexual abuse. I have been trained by 'StopSO' Sexual Abuse Prevention in working with Sexual Offending Behaviours.

I am fully Accredited by the BACP (MBACP Accred) and I am on their National Register, Ref. 616215. Please call or email (No SMS please) to arrange an appointment.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Additional information

Fees range from £35 to £70 per hour for individual work (lower cost sessions are usually daytime only but I will try to be flexible)

Group fees are lower than individual fees and range roughly from £25-£35 depending on what you can afford.

Supervision; Individual & Group Supervision available. See my Supervision listing on Counselling Directory for more information.

I provide some daytime lower cost therapy sessions to make it accessible to those on lower incomes. I also provide lower cost packages to clients who commit to longer term agreements such as students and trainees. I can also offer some flexibility around the number/regularity of sessions to make therapy more affordable e.g. 3 per month rather than 4.

Please call or email (No SMS please) to arrange an appointment.

When I work

Day/evening sessions. Outcalls may be possible for those unable to travel due to serious illness/disability. Limited lower cost (daytime only) sessions available for lower income clients.

Further information

I enjoy what I do enormously. People fascinate me and I really do like to see the good in all of us. I stand by the idea that there is no behaviour without reason. This make being non-judgemental much easier.

Change is hard and even often frightening. Therapy itself is also hard and can be frightening. That's why I called my practice Brave Therapy - to honour the courage and commitment of clients seeking change. I do everything I can to build a safe and nurturing relationship with clients where they don't feel frightened or intimidated.

If you are reading this, then you have already accepted that there is something going on which you want to address. Together we will look at the issues, see what is a reasonable and manageable way forward and give you the space and time to reflect, feel and share what is going on with you in the process of therapy and change.

I am based in Minto St, Edinburgh. There is paid parking outside and the Number 7, 3 and 8 Bus drops you less than a minute away. Parking is free in the evenings and some free parking about 3 minutes walk away.
