About me

Art Therapy Provision in Wirral.

What is Art Therapy: Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of expression and communication. Within this context, art is not used as a diagnostic tool but as a medium to address emotional issues which may be confusing and distressing.

Art therapists work with children, young people, adults and the elderly. Clients may have a wide range of difficulties, disabilities or diagnoses. These include emotional, behavioural or mental health problems, learning or physical disabilities, life-limiting conditions, neurological conditions and physical illnesses.

Art therapy is provided in groups or individually, depending on clients' needs. It is not a recreational activity or an art lesson, although the sessions can be enjoyable. Clients do not need to have any previous experience or expertise in art.

Art Therapy sessions: Sessions are confidential and are held in a safe and private space.

You can choose what to make or do but guidance is provided. Art making offers an active and collaborative opportunity for creative self expression and increased self awareness in addition to verbal communication. Art therapy can increase self esteem and develop personal strengths leading to positive change.

Art work is stored safely in a personal folder until therapy ends when you can decide what to do with it.

Sessions last for an hour at the same time and place each week for as long as necessary. You can choose to use a variety of materials including: paints, felt tip pens, clay, pastels, pencils, collage materials, sand trays with natural and other objects.

Why Use Art: Sometimes it can be difficult to talk about or understand confusing or distressing feelings. Communicating through art is a different approach which may seem easier. Guidance is given to help you understand your art and any upsetting feelings noticed in a safe and private space. Remember you do not need to be 'good at art'.

you may be encouraged to work further on issues in the artwork, or in another way such as talking about the feelings, usually people feel better after this, but it can sometimes take a while to work through.

How to make an appointment: It may seem difficult to take that first step and make an appointment but it is normal to feel this way. You can email or telephone to arrange an art therapy taster session to help you to decide if it feels right for you. You can try out different art materials and ask questions about art therapy.

You can change your mind and end sessions at any time, even if you have started art therapy.

Experience:

I have worked as a health care professional in various clinical and non clinical settings. My journey began as a staff nurse. In each setting I was aware of the significance of holistic psychological care. This interest in Psychological therapy developed into an Integrative Counsellor role in 2002 with young people and adults both independently and in a Further Education College (2006 - 2016). Art making (a personal passion) has been integrated into therapeutic practice as appropriate, alongside health promotion and psycho-education. During the art therapy MA course I was able to further develop my identity as an artist and incorporate creativity with psychotherapy. A particularly enjoyable and interesting placement was based at a residential special educational needs school for children aged 8 to 16 years. Psychodynamic/attachment theories married with art making fostered safe creative self expression, understanding and communication which elicited positive emotional changes and enhanced educational experiences.

April 2016 - 2018 I provided an art therapy and counselling service at Mersey Counselling and Therapy Centre (MCTC) with groups and individuals. I currently provide an Independent Art Therapy and Counselling / Psychotherapy Service and enjoy working with, young people and adults with a diverse range of issues.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

HCPC
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
