About me

Sometimes our life experiences can creep up on us without any warning signs or preparation. This can often have a negative impact on our lives and can leave us feeling emotionally overwhelmed, fearful, lost or stuck. We may not know where to go, who to trust, and who to ask for help which can also leave us struggling to manage.

There are many reasons for seeking counselling. This could include;

  • all types of abuse
  • anxiety and depression
  • stress, including work-related stress
  • low self-esteem
  • health and well-being conditions
  • academic challenges
  • social isolation
  • addiction
  • relationship issues
  • feelings of guilt and shame
  • bereavement and loss including pet bereavement and loss
  • difficult life events

Having someone who isn't a friend, colleague, or family member to talk to may help you to work through whatever difficulties you are experiencing right now.

How counselling can help

Hello and welcome. I’m Joanne, a Person-Centred Counsellor based in the Cheshire area. I offer a confidential and safe space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings in a caring and non-judgemental way.

My aim is to work with you to ensure that you feel safe enough to be yourself and talk freely as well as explore your thoughts and feelings, whether positive or negative, without fear of rejection or disapproval using the Person-Centred approach as a foundation.

With my help facilitating this process, Counselling provides you with the opportunity to work through any difficulties you may be experiencing and enables you to reach your own conclusions rather than me telling you what to do or how to be.

What to expect from me

I don’t have a magic wand but I do strive to bring wisdom, empathy, integrity, respect and humanity into the counselling relationship along with genuineness, trust, high levels of self-awareness and a passion for counselling.

I am committed to helping you achieve what you want to gain from counselling and recognise that everyone is a unique individual, therefore, base the approach of the counselling to suit your needs and what fits best for you. Sometimes finding words to explain how we may be feeling can be difficult, therefore in counselling, I am open to your suggestions of what works best for you.

I am wise, friendly, approachable, and welcoming and endeavour to always work within my capabilities as a counsellor and to the best of my abilities.

Your experiences are unique to you. So what are you waiting for, let your journey towards self-discovery and personal growth begin!

I offer an initial free 20 minute call for you to ask questions about the support I provide and hopefully this will give you a better understanding of whether you would like to work with me as your counsellor.

Training, qualifications & experience

Experience

I began counselling as a volunteer, supporting clients who have experienced sexual and domestic abuse. I fulfilled many roles within the same organisation initially starting in 2008 as a volunteer administrator whilst studying for the Certificate in Counselling to gain some experience of working within a counselling organisation. This provided me with the knowledge, skills and experience I needed to fully appreciate the impact that both sexual and domestic abuse has on people, including their families and supporters.

For me, training as a counsellor helped me to explore my own personal experiences through various methods including creativity which in turn has helped me to trust myself and work at a deeper emotional level. I also feel that through personal development I have experienced empowerment for myself, therefore, adopt this in practice with clients.

Before counselling my background involves working with children in various educational settings.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I have recently been actively involved in creating a wellbeing hub which aims to help victims and survivors of sexual abuse access helpful resources for their mental health and wellbeing, whilst they are waiting to access counselling support. Within this, I have written content, created activities and information videos for topics such as: anxiety, stress, self-harm, boundaries, anger, preparing for counselling and what to expect from counselling, and guilt and shame, as well as developing mindfulness meditation and breathing techniques for clients.
