Joanne Crystal (Msc. MA) - Online Child, Teenager & Young Person Counsellor
Hello! I work with children, teenagers and those in their early twenties. I am trained in CBT, Person Centred, Psycho-dynamic and Existential methods.
Working with young people and teenagers specifically requires me to remember and engage with my adolescent self (present in all of us!). We often forget the mindset we had at this age in life (inquisitive, sensitive, experimental and testing). I grappled with constructs I had of myself and my relationship to others; and this could be an uncertain and painful process. Sometimes one that leads young people into depressive, highly anxious and mentally unstable states.
I will work carefully to discover and get alongside you (or your child), to build trust that will provide a platform for going forward. Struggles with this age group often include issues of self esteem/self worth/self identity and family dynamics (including divorce), which can underlie many other presenting issues (stress, depression, eating disorders, risky behaviour etc).
I can use my counselling skills to 1) reduce anxiety/depression and negative/ harmful behaviours; and, 2) improve general well-being! I can empower them to become capable of change in a way they had previously not been. And, begin the journey of their lives with more awareness, well being and hope.
Online therapy is proven to work and can be very convenient for busy young people. I work on video conferencing platforms (Zoom and Whatsapp) or via telephone.
I will try to accommodate any planning needs of the client, (for example I can do 25 minute sessions if this is more convenient). If you would be happier writing your feelings down than talking, I can also offer email therapy.
Please email or call me to book a session, or simply to discuss things further. I will reply as soon as possible and call you back if I am unable to take your call.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am an Independent member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) and uphold their ethical code. This means that I maintain strict confidentiality with my clients.
I hold a Masters degree in Counselling Psychology (MSc.) which I gained after completing a Psychology Postgraduate Diploma (Pg.Dip) at the University of Nottingham.
I have worked extensively as a counsellor in schools and, since then, have always had a passion for working with younger people. I have subsequently updated my training at the New School of Counselling and Psychotherapy; and by receiving frequent clinical supervision with another child specialist.
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
