My belief in the benefit of talking therapies was realised after the experience I gained as a Samaritan volunteer. For many, just having the opportunity to offload their feelings in a confidential environment, to an anonymous, empathetic, non-judgemental listener is all that is required.
The humanistic counselling I offer includes models such as, person-centred, which is a client lead therapy, psychodynamic, which explores reasons for distressing feelings, Solution Focus, which is a brief therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy(CBT), which focuses on the logical reality of the problem and Mindfulness, which concentrates on present senses.
However, whichever model is used research shows that the most important factor in healing appears to be the trusting relationship that potentially, develops between the client and counsellor. Consequently, I am always aware of this factor during the process.
