About me

I am a qualified and experienced Counsellor and Supervisor, and my style of working is warm, empathic and relational.  Over the years I have been practising professionally as a Counsellor, I have enjoyed working with both individuals and couples on a wide range of issues and concerns.  I care deeply about the working relationships with my clients and therefore take very seriously the requirements of my professional body (BACP)  to ensure that I practise safely and ethically, offering a safe, confidential and professional service.

I have worked in the field of Mental Health for many years; initially as a specialist Approved Social Worker, and for the past 12 years, as a Counsellor.  My experience of working with a diverse range of people over the years has helped me develop and enhance my understanding of the struggles and difficulties that clients bring to Counselling.
I offer a confidential and professional counselling service from my private practice based near Axminster, East Devon, on the borders of both West Dorset and South Somerset. I offer Integrative Counselling, which means that I am trained in a range of therapeutic approaches, including humanistic, CBT and psychodynamic models and can draw on these methods to match your particular situation and goals that you wish to address. Rather than attempting to "fix' you, I view my role as a facilitator, enabling you, the client, to explore and discover a creative way forward to achieving your full potential

How Counselling can Help:

Counselling is a process which takes place within a two-way, supportive relationship between client and counsellor. It can help you make sense of thoughts, feelings & circumstances which may be troubling you at present, 'and preventing you from making full use of your potential. Current difficulties are often rooted in the past, so counselling invariably involves exploring past and present relationships which may be painful and challenging. However, by doing this in a supportive and safe way, this may increase your insight and understanding, and help you live your life in more fulfilling and hopeful ways.

Counselling with someone who does not judge you or tell you what to do is a process that enables you to talk through and explore your thoughts and feelings in depth, in a way which is often not possible with family or friends. I aim to provide a safe space to facilitate this therapeutic process, and to develop an honest, trusting relationship where you feel supported and listened to, which will enable you to understand and resolve your difficulties and dilemmas.

I work flexibly and can offer either short-term  or longer-term work, but will always be guided by what you, the client, feel you need.

I work privately from home and see clients in a comfortable, private room. There is ample, free parking adjacent to my house.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a Registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, and as such, subscribe to the BACP Code of Ethics, which is their framework for good practice.
Over the years I have gained a wide experience of working with people of all ages and backgrounds within the NHS, Social Services, and the Charitable and Voluntary sector. Until very recently I practiced within the NHS as a Primary Care Counsellor at several East Devon GP medical practices, working with clients with a range of common mental health difficulties, e.g., depression, anxiety, trauma, complex trauma, eating disorders, low self esteem, and relationship issues, to name a few. My focus is now my own private practice which, due to Covid-19, is via video link or phone only.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
