Joan Marie Norton - MBACP
Dealing with emotions can be difficult as our responses to situations can seem irrational to others as well as ourselves. Sometimes you just need someone to talk to who is impartial, listens and supports you to work through your emotional difficulties. Friends and family mean well but they can leave us feeling vulnerable and isolated and may struggle to understand.
I offer support with a variety of issues including Anxiety, Depression, Stress, Relationship Issues, Bereavement, Loss, Addictions, OCD, Sexual Abuse, Physical Abuse, Phobias, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Asperger's and Autism. I also work with those who self-harm, especially teenagers. I ensure that you have strategies in place that you feel confident using once counselling ends.
Many of us lead such busy lives that we don't take time out to relax, our minds can feel that they are on information overload. Relaxation using Hypnotherapy techniques can produce a calming effect on mind and body reducing the pressures of modern life.
I am a qualified psychotherapist specialising in Person-Centred and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Hypnotherapy, a member of the BACP and the BABCP with full professional indemnity insurance. In a confidential, supportive, safe space you can discuss and explore your personal issues, choices, behaviours, thoughts, beliefs and feelings without fear of judgement, reproach or discrimination. I offer empathy, respect and understanding in a non-judgmental way.
Alongside my private practice I also provide a counselling service at a Carer’s Centre and work within a Local Authority Social Care environment. Previous work has included various charitable organisations in Preston and Accrington. I have worked with adults of all ages from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures who have experienced varying levels of distress and difficult life experiences, supporting them to promote positive change in their lives. My work with children and teenagers has centred on specific issues covering self-esteem, self-harm and social anxiety.
How counselling can help - The aim of counselling is to help you understand yourself and use this knowledge to regain control of your life, so you can decide what is right for you. I will not give advice or tell you what to do, that is not what counselling is about. People enter into counselling or psychotherapy for many reasons – each person’s issues are unique. Sometimes we need to talk, but more importantly we need someone who will listen without judgement. Saying how you feel can be difficult, you may feel the subject matter is just too sensitive or fear that others may be shocked by your thoughts and feelings.
What to expect in your first session – The first session is offered at a reduced rate. This session covers the counselling contract, confidentiality and completion of the initial assessment. We can explore your reasons for seeking counselling and your expectations of how counselling could help you.
What happens in a Session?
Sessions last 60 minutes and offer the opportunity to reflect on how you think, feel and respond to life events. In a professional and supportive environment, you can discuss past experiences, current challenges or your hopes for the future with a qualified and experienced therapist. The number of sessions required depends upon the individual, you are in control. There will be no pressure or obligation to continue with sessions, the choice remains with you.
Cash, cheque or bank transfer. I am unable to accept debit/credit card transaction
Sometimes it is necessary to cancel an appointment and if 24 hours notice is given there is no cancellation fee. Less than 24 hours notice may incur a £20 fee except in special circumstances. The full session fee is payable for non attendance to an arranged session.

I am finally able to stop worrying about what others think of me and put more emphasis on what I think of myself. ES
I am pleased to provide a testimonial for the professional support l am receiving from Joan during a very difficult time. When l first saw Joan she encouraged me to talk through my problems and feelings. Joan has a calm manner and through my weekly sessions she has given me confidence to face what l am dealing with, at first l cried through every session. Gradually Joan has shown me how to cope with my constant negative thoughts and l now manage to enjoy life a bit more. I am now in a better emotional state to deal with life. Thank you Joan. AL
I have been supported by Joan throughout a very difficult period of my life. Joan has helped me to explore my feelings and work out how I can make changes to improve my life. I have learned to control my panic attacks and they happen less frequently and are no longer scary. MW
Thank you for everything you've done Joan. JT
I was amazed that after only 2 sessions I had begun to feel happier in myself. My life doesn't seem quite so bleak. I couldn't believe that someone would really understand how I feel. NA
I thought I would just sit there with nothing to say, I couldn't believe how fast the time went and I felt exhausted from all that talking. So many things I have kept bottled up for years now that I've said them I feel like a weight has been lifted. JH
