About me

Hi – my name is Jo.  I’m a Counselling Psychotherapist and I work with adults, children and young people.

Sometimes life will present us with challenges and difficulties that we struggle to make sense of, or that make us feel stuck and unable to move forward positively. Not knowing what to do or how to be when we have these experiences can create a diverse set of uncomfortable feelings. Its different for everyone...whilst one person may feel overwhelmed or isolated, another may struggle with anger, anxiety or depression. Perhaps this sound like you?

I believe we all have within us the strength to make positive changes to ourselves and our lives - we just need a little help at the right time.  Counselling will provide you with the space to reflect and work through your difficulties alongside myself as your counsellor, who will listen unjudgementally, understand, reflect back and sometimes gently challenge you – but from a place of caring and support and always with your individual needs in mind.

Experience:

My early experience stemmed from working with charities including KidsAid (children and parent work), Mind (mental health charity), Cruse (bereavement and loss), and the NSPCC (working in schools addressing abuse and neglect). I have been in private practice for 5 years.

I provide counselling for a wide range of difficulties (see "areas of counselling" below) including anxiety and depression, trauma, and loss and bereavement. I have experience working with a wide variety of trauma experiences, and also neglect and abuse (including domestic violence and childhood abuse). I regularly work with relational issues (adult to adult, and also parenting work).

If you are unsure whether I can meet your needs, please do contact me to enquire further.

Training and Professional Membership:

I hold a Master’s degree in Counselling (gained at the University of Northampton) and regularly attend courses to enhance and update my knowledge and consult on new ideas. I am an Accredited, registered member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) and as such I work within their ethical framework and code of conduct to ensure strictly confidentiality, and emotionally safe therapeutic interventions. I have also trained in the advanced psychotherapy "EMDR" (Eye Movement De-sensitisation and Re processing). This can be used to treat trauma, PTSD and troublesome memories.

I believe every client is unique and will have differing needs, priorities and preferences in ways of working. I have been trained as an Integrative therapist, drawing from Person Centred, Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approaches. I also use creative approaches with adults and teens where beneficial.

Choosing your counsellor:

Choosing the right counsellor; one you feel comfortable with, is a vital part of taking the first step forward in addressing your difficulties.  Selecting from a picture and profile can be hard. Please feel able to ring or email me and ask any questions you might have. If it feels right we can arrange a reduced cost introductory session and go from there. If at this stage you feel I am not the right counsellor for you it really is ok - you are under no obligation to have further sessions and I won’t mind or be offended!

A little about me...

I am passionate about counselling and seeing how the process can change people's lives - and for me, the most satisfying part of my work comes from saying goodbye to a client where I have seen transformative change - this is both moving and humbling as the path for clients can be a difficult one. It is my privilege to work alongside and fully support a client during this process.

As well as counselling, I have been a foster carer for 6 years providing a therapeutic home for up to two siblings on a short term (up to 18 months) basis. I have extensive experience in helping children move on from trauma caused by neglect, abuse and bullying. I hold a current Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. I also work with parents struggling with the demands of parenthood including those at risk of having their children removed.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
