About me

Hi, I'm Jan, a person-centred counsellor based in Loughton.

I always wanted to help people, for as long as I can remember, I was a rescuer...now I am trained and work with people to enable them to work out answers to their problems - you are your own expert, I can help you see the way.

I moved to counselling from work in schools, with parents and children to overcome obstacles to their positive mental health, where building their resilience became my focus. I have a person centred approach, working with you to achieve your goal.

Being person centred means that I believe in an equal relationship between the therapist and the client, and that we will work together with empathy, a non-judgemental approach and a genuine wish to build resilience. I work with issues such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, low self-confidence and stress. I believe that everyone has answers, but may need help to find them.

I work with adults, using a person centred approach where you decide what we talk about. This could be emotions or anxieties and I can use CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) for the short term. With younger children, I use child centred play therapy, where children explore their issues through play. With teens and older children we talk, using child/teen friendly language.

I am lucky enough to work near Epping Forest and Lee Valley, and can offer walk and talk sessions if you prefer to be outside.

Both short and long term work is offered, I am member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapists), and I work within the BACP code of ethics which can be found online their website.

I am about to qualify as a supervisor, and am now able to offer supervision too.

I am down to earth and realise that a sense of humour can be useful in the healing process! If you would like to discuss further how I can help, or how we can work together; please get in touch.

Member organisations

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
