About me

Thanks for looking at my profile. I start from a basic belief that people have, or can acquire, the inner resources they need to enable them to achieve a life that works well for them and see my role very much as a facilitator of this process. My goal is to empower you to overcome any emotional challenges you may face in moving on with your life in the desired direction and to support you to do this just as quickly as you want to.

To do this I might use a wide range of methods as appropriate for you and your particular situation. My approach may also include providing information to help you understand your own mind/body system and what keeps it healthy, and if appropriate teaching you tools that you can use at home, for example breathing and meditation/mindfulness techniques for stress management. I often suggest 'homework' for you to do between sessions. I always use down to earth language, and no matter what the issue we are working on together I do not believe that you have to feel worse before you can feel better, nor that you have to commit to years of sessions in order to achieve what you are seeking. Whether you are seeing me for coaching, counselling or psychotherapy my aim is always for you to feel that you are making progress right from the first session and to enable you to stop needing to see me as quickly as possible. Typically I might see someone for around 4-5 sessions though some people need fewer and some will need more ongoing support.

The types of issues I can help you with are very broad but include;

  • professional/career/work aspirations or problems
  • relationship issues
  • health and well-being goals, including weight loss/smoking cessation
  • performance coaching (e.g for public speaking/interviews)
  • the emotional component of physical health issues, including chronic pain
  • life changes, including menopause and bereavement
  • stress, anxiety, panic attacks and phobias
  • depression
  • psychological trauma, PTSD
  • addictions

If your life has become a little 'stuck' for whatever reason I can help you gain understanding, discover your own innate resources, find solutions, take control, set goals, and get your life moving forward again in the direction you desire in as short a time as possible. But of course a really important part of coaching/counselling/psychotherapy is feeling that your helper 'gets' you and that you trust them, so do please ring me for a chat to see whether we could work well together!

Training, qualifications & experience

Having started out in biology and then practicing medicine for 25 years I have had a lifetime of studying how we function as human beings, and what drives us, particularly at the level of our neurobiology. Over this time I have acquired a broad understanding of various psychological models, and to apply this knowledge practically I have a range of 'people helping' qualifications in coaching, neurolinguistic programming, psychotherapy/counselling, and hypnosis, as well as years of experience in storytelling and drama techniques. I may use any or all of these as appropriate for the person I am helping and the issue in question.

My professional conduct and continuing professional development are monitored by the Human Givens Institute (HGI) which works predominantly to a 'needs based' model of psychology that is applicable to coaching, counselling or therapy. The register of the HGI is accredited under the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care in the UK, and I abide by its ethics policy and complaints procedure. I have full public liability insurance and DBS clearance.
