Jamie Nicol MSc. ~ MBACP Accredited & Registered, BABCP Accredited.
Hello and welcome to my profile. My name is Jamie Nicol, I am a qualified, accredited and experienced therapist offering a confidential and professional service to individuals of all ages in Stafford and Birmingham. I hold a fully enhanced DBS clearance certificate (formerly known as CRB) and am a recognised practitioner with BUPA and other major healthcare insurance companies.
My work with people can be either short or long-term depending on what best suits a persons individual need. I provide a variety of therapies including Counselling, CBT and EMDR. I work with individuals who are experiencing issues relating to depression, health, low self-esteem, work related stress, anxiety, abuse, anger, trauma, sexuality, bereavement and loss and many other problem areas (please see the list on the right hand side of the page). I also work with individuals who are experiencing relationship difficulties perhaps as a result of the issues mentioned.
Many of us can benefit from the understanding and support of a skilled and reliable person at challenging times in our lives. This support can help us make sense of some of our thoughts, feelings and behaviours. I believe the overall aim of therapy is to provide people with space to talk and reflect on issues in their life that feel important, and also ones that are possibly causing distress. I see my role as a therapist as building trusting and effective working relationships with people and providing a safe environment where they can gain further awareness, alongside exploring ways in which they can better cope or manage. I consider myself to be a grounded practitioner who respects peoples’ values, culture, existing skills and autonomy. I also firmly believe that we are all capable of making productive changes when we are ready and able.
Both of my offices are comfortable and discreet and there are free parking spaces nearby each location. I can also provide home visits in certain situations although we would need to discuss this option beforehand.
My Stafford office is located within walking distance from the town centre. There are numerous free parking spaces nearby and the building where my office is based has full disabled access and toilet facilities. My therapy room is just a couple of minutes from a bus stop (Greyfriars) which is on the main route for buses arriving from the north and south of Stafford as well as Newcastle under Lyme and Stoke on Trent. At this venue, I offer sessions on Tuesday mornings and afternoons alongside Wednesday afternoons and evenings.
My Birmingham office is situated within the business district of Edgbaston. The office is located conveniently near to Five Ways with free parking available. There are also excellent rail and bus links only a few minutes away. At this venue, I offer sessions on Monday afternoons and evenings as well as on a Thursday mornings and afternoons.
I can provide home visits in certain cases where there may be a difficulty in travelling, although this option would need to be discussed beforehand.
I appreciate how difficult it can be for some people to make that first step to seek professional help. Why not call or email me so that you can decide for yourself whether you would like us to work together?
Training, qualifications & experience
I am a registered and accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I am also fully accredited with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP). Since 2013 I have been a member of EMDR Association of the UK & Ireland. In 2015 I also became a member of the Association of Child and Adolescent Mental Health. (ACAMH).
My core training was as a humanistic counsellor although I have since also trained and qualified as a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist. I prefer to use what is described as an integrative approach (combining various concepts in thinking and approaches in therapy) and by using my assessment skills and experience I provide therapy which is evidence-based. I appreciate that each person is an individual and I understand that it is important to be flexible and tailor therapy to meet a persons unique needs.
I began my counselling skills training in 1998 and progressively moved into higher education graduating from both Keele and Staffordshire Universities. Qualifications that I have gained include;
- Master of Science (MSc.) in Counselling Psychology
- Post Graduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
- Post Graduate Certificate in Counselling Supervision
- Graduate Diploma in Counselling
- Certificate in Counselling
- Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Training
- EMDR Institute Training: Parts 1-3
- EMDR with Children and Adolescents: Parts 1&2
My experience of enabling and supporting people through growth or recovery has been acquired by working for many years within the NHS, voluntary sector and privately. I have extensive experience working with individuals and families within palliative care and those undergoing or recovering from oncology treatment. I also have experience of working therapeutically with children and adolescents in primary and secondary school settings utilising creative and play therapies. I welcome referrals from all ages from children through to senior citizens.
I work affirmatively with LGBT clients and their relationships.
As an accredited practitioner I am committed to further developing my skills and abilities by attending and participating in professional development training courses and events throughout the year.
Thank you for reading my page and whatever you decide to do I wish you well, Jamie.
Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies
The BABCP is the lead organisation for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in the UK.
Membership is open to anyone with an interest in the practice, theory or development of CBT. BABCP also provides accreditation for CBT therapists.
BABCP accredited members adhere to the Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics in the Practice of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies, and are willing to be scrutinised in this adherence as required.
