Jacqui Williams MBACP, MA, BA (Hons) Couples Counselling & Relationship Therapy
The Tree Room Centre
12 Trinity Street
I am a trained relationship therapist, working with individuals, couples and families. My practice in Colchester offers you a safe and calm place where you can talk openly and freely about any issues that may be troubling you.
Some of the relationship problems I work with include communication issues, jealousy and insecurity, affairs and betrayals, family issues, separation and divorce.
You may have parenting or step-parenting concerns, be struggling with bereavement, with different life stages or with addiction in the family.
Maybe you feel you just aren’t getting the most out of life or your relationships. You might be looking for help to start a new relationship.
We all have times in our life when extra support can be really helpful and there is so much value in talking to a therapist who has the training, skills and experience to understand what you might be going through.
Couples Counselling/Relationship Counselling
I trained with Relate and then went on to complete my Masters in Relationship Therapy. I still work with Relate in Colchester on a Monday, alongside my private practice, offering couples counselling and family counselling. I am passionate about the work we do to help couples and individuals have the kind of relationships they long for.
Rather than working from just one therapeutic approach, I bring together the knowledge and techniques I have gained from my years of training & experience. I draw on what is most useful to the couple, family or individual I am talking with and what meets their needs or personal preferences.
We might focus on your childhood and how that has influenced your life decisions or instead reflect on what is affecting your life right now. It could be that incorporating mindfulness techniques or cognitive-behavioural strategies would be useful for you. We might also use psychoeducation or neuroscience to inform our sessions.
However we choose to proceed, in individual, couples or family counselling, we will work collaboratively and make therapeutic decisions together.
Initial Consultation – your first session:
This is a structured session which is both an assessment and a consultation. I ask each of you about your perspective on the relationship, clarify your definition of your problems and explore the changes you are looking for. You have the opportunity to decide whether you feel we can work comfortably together.
Subsequent ongoing sessions
Sessions are weekly, lasting 55 minutes and continue for as long as we feel they are helpful. While some of my work is short term (between 8 and 10 sessions) some clients choose to work longer on deeper or more fundamental change. If you are coming for couples or family counselling I like to see each of you individually after the initial consultation so that I can truly understand your perspective and gain a deeper understanding of your individual concerns.
What will a typical session involve:
Our sessions together will combine reflection and understanding as we explore present, past and hoped for future relationships. It will embrace a wide range of carefully researched theories and have a bespoke therapeutic framework that is personal to your needs.
When is the right time to have couples counselling?
Research shows that the quality of our closest relationships has a major impact on every aspect of our lives. So, it's worth investing in our significant relationships. If you feel that things aren't right between you and you long for a deeper or more loving relationship then do please get in touch.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have a Masters in Relationship Therapy and am a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists.
For many years now, I have also worked as a counsellor in the voluntary sector and I am always humbled by the courage and resilience shown by the people I meet, despite the difficulties they face.
Before becoming a therapist, I worked in communications, helping individuals and businesses to forge successful relationships. Interestingly, it was always the simplest solutions that were the most effective - and usually they sprang from careful listening and creating a message that was truly heartfelt.
I have taught psychology to young people and adults in further education and have maintained my interest in developing training and coaching programmes for more productive learning - and living.

Other areas of counselling I deal with
Relationship coaching is a specially developed series of six sessions for anyone who would like to start a new relationship.
You may be someone who is starting to think about dating again or perhaps you would like to understand why your last relationship didn't work out.
Together, we work through a different relationship area each week using a mix of counselling and coaching techniques. Using ideas and strategies from psychodynamic, CBT and family systems theories we look at your relationship history and what influences, past and present, have affected how you behave in a relationship.
The aim of these sessions is to help you find the relationship that works best for you.
