Training, qualifications & experience

Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology (DCounsPsy) - University of Manchester

Experience: Over 10 years

Having worked within the NHS, private and third sector organisations, I have demonstrated an ability to practise safely and effectively, informed by an understanding of the need to act in the best interest of my clients. I have managed my caseload effectively, by adhering to both personal and professional boundaries. I understand, respect and adhere to my competencies and healthcare policies in regards to my client work, documentation, safeguarding and referral processes. I also maintain my fitness to practice and remain committed to updating my skills and knowledge. This involves revisiting previously gained understandings and diversifying my knowledge (through CPD activities) on both reflective and evidence-based approaches in relation to my therapeutic work.

Within my professional roles as a Counselling Psychologist, I demonstrate an understanding of the psychological, social, and relational distress experienced by clients with wide ranging difficulties (including depression, anxiety, mood and personality related difficulties, eating disorders, trauma etc). I have also been able to initiate, develop, maintain and end therapeutic relationships with my clients effectively. This has been evidenced by their engagement and progress in therapy.

The psychological assessment, formulation and intervention I offer for my clients is aimed at increasing their self-awareness and co- creating an understanding of their experienced distress, needs, goals and expectations of therapy. I also continually reflect on the formulations collaboratively with clients (and in supervision) and revise these in light of any new information. The shared understanding gained in the assessment and formulation process informs the collaborative therapeutic plans with each of my clients. Risks are also assessed regularly using qualitative in-session assessment and in supervision.

In my therapeutic work, I also demonstrate an understanding of the psychological, social, and relational distress experienced by clients presenting with complex and enduring mental health difficulties. I supplement this, by utilising my knowledge of a range of explanatory frameworks such as Humanistic (Person Centred Therapy) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapies (CBT, DBT, ACT). I also routinely administer psychometrics (such as GAD-7, PHQ-9 and CORE-R, IES- R, EDE-Q,OCI, ACE-III etc.) with my clients at varying points in therapy and obtain qualitative feedback from them throughout the therapeutic process. This allows me to develop an enhanced understanding of my client's distress and progress. I also maintain accurate client records and process notes in an ethical and secure manner.

It is also important to note that I have worked on inpatient wards and various community mental health settings as part of an MDT; alongside psychiatrists, nurses, occupational therapists dieticians and healthcare assistants.

During the various roles highlighted, I have been able to deliver reflective and evidence based therapies for clients from diverse backgrounds; varying in ethnicity, language, socio-economic status and religious beliefs. My practice has been governed by my personal/professional values and policies of equality and diversity in treating all my clients fairly and respecting their idiosyncrasies and diversities.
