How I can help you
I realise it can be tremendously challenging to talk about our problems or to express difficult feelings. So I aim to offer you a safe place to talk about anything that may be confusing, painful or uncomfortable. Counselling provides you with an opportunity to think and talk about yourself and your concerns in a way that is not always possible with family or friends. It is a space that provides acceptance and empathy of the way you are without judgement.
You might be aware, that you’re not happy and in distress but afraid or confused as to how to change this. Sadly, counselling is something that still has a stigma attached to it, why is it a sign of weakness to ask for help? Surely that’s a healthier approach than feeling vulnerable and isolated. One that can be truly rewarding, it really is good to talk. Counselling will help you to understand the immensely positive benefits in doing so.
My experience has shown me that counselling is an effective way to help empower you, to define and accomplish your goals. It can enable deeper personal insight, equip you with better coping strategies, and lead to improved relationships.
We begin by either having an initial conversation by phone about what is distressing you, (this is free of charge) or we can meet to talk in further detail. After this initial meeting, you are under no pressure to continue, it really is important you get a feel for whether you can work with me as this is crucial to the benefit you gain from counselling. I seek to provide you with a clarity of understanding throughout the whole process, so nothing seems confusing or pressurised.
Training, qualifications & experience
As a qualified, Humanistic and Integrative Counsellor & Psychotherapist, my training is accredited and recognised by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) http://www.bacp.co.uk .
I hold a BSc (Hons) degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy and have trained for seven years to develop my professional competence. I have experience of providing both short-term solution focused therapy (SFBT) and long term therapeutic relationships, gained from working with clients aged 12 and upwards. I can offer counselling ranging from a few sessions or long term therapy. Most clients achieve real growth in six to twelve weeks and even more in open-ended counselling. The frequency of these sessions is down to you, you really are in charge of how the counselling works.
Before practising privately, I worked in a university counselling service and charitable counselling centre which has exposed me to clients from diverse social and cultural backgrounds with varied presenting issues. I have also spent six years working in mental health services so have a deep appreciation and knowledge of mental health issues. Collectively, this experience has showed me just how important and beneficial talk therapy can be.
I am a member of the BACP and adhere to their ethical standards for good practice. I am entered on their Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists, which is approved by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care http://www.bacpregister.org.uk
My training and development is ongoing, it is part of my commitment to professional and personal development. I hope this also assures you that I aim to provide you with the highest level of service.
