About me

I am a fully trained BACP Accredited counsellor  and trainee supervisor working in Worcester. My approach is based in the belief that:

  • we all have the potential for growth and change, even when things seem hopeless.
  • our natural urge is to thrive, even when we seem to be trapped in cycles, lost in chaos, or feel low in motivation.
  • by having a caring and honest relationship where we can talk through what we are experiencing, we can increasingly choose how we respond to the issues that arise in our lives.

I am based in a pleasant garden office in Worcester where I offer brief and longer term counselling for a wide range of concerns. I generally work with adults and young people aged over 16 years. Empathy and genuineness lie at the heart of my approach and, influenced by Humanist approaches, I value the uniqueness of every client's needs.

Taking your time to consider committing to counselling, as well as choosing the right counsellor for you, can be a significant part of the therapeutic process. When you feel ready, you can contact me via whichever medium best suits you: email, text or phone. This first contact may in itself help you to get a feel for if you are ready to take the next step, which would be for us to arrange an initial meeting. This initial meeting, which is charged at £45, will help us explore in more depth what you would like from counselling, and how far we would be able to work well together. If we feel we make a good fit, we will then agree as to how we would like to work, and will arrange to meet once a week.

The website link above will lead you to more information on who I am, the ways I work, and how I may be able to help through these varied approaches:

  • Person-centred counselling
  • EMDR and Attachment Informed EMDR
  • Polyvagal theory strategies
  • Evolutionary adaptive theory

Training, qualifications & experience

Outside of private practice, I greatly value my long term work with adolescents, and more recent work specifically with care-leavers. My initial training focused on bereavement and life-changing illness at a Worcestershire hospice. In addition to counselling, I have been a Specialist Mentor for college and university students benefiting from mental health support.
Previous to counselling, I trained in teaching literature and creative writing, which I have also used therapeutically.

My qualifications:

  • Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling
  • Level 5 Diploma in Counselling Children & Young People
  • EMDR (Europe Accredited Training)
  • Attachment Informed EMDR
  • CPD Level 4 Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Certificate in Therapeutic Life Story Work
  • MA Humanities & History of European Medicine 1500-1930
  • PGCE (FE)
  • BA Hons English
  • currently undertaking a Post Graduate Certificate in Supervision

Of course, just as importantly is the experience of facing change in myself, and of having been witness to others in their own times of transition.

Other training includes:

  • Working with psycho-pharmacology and its withdrawal
  • Understanding autistic spectrum condition in classic and 'female' presentations
  • Understanding Alcohol and Substance Misuse
  • Sleep cycles
  • Counselling Young People Online
  • Psychological and Behavioural Impacts of Malnutrition in Eating Disorder
  • Grief in adults and children
  • Freefall writing - therapeutic writing

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I have a particular interest in the significance of secondary socialisation on our personalities, especially the influence of adolescent experiences on our adult selves.

I also very much value working with clients who have had weight restoration and other rehabilitation programmes and who feel they would benefit from processing that experience.
