Helen Maxwell, MA (Cantab.), MSc Gestalt Psychotherapy, PGDip Child Counselling
6 Hay's Lane
Counselling is an opportunity to understand your self better and to explore any issues in your life that are causing you psychological distress.
Life isn't always easy. Sometimes the same old problems come up again and again, or suddenly we face new losses or other challenging life events. Difficult childhood memories, the impact of trauma or relationships that are just not going well can destabilise any one of us, sometimes resulting in depression or ongoing anxiety.
Talking to a therapist who will listen with empathy, and not judge you, can bring relief and healing. Mental health has become a regular topic of conversation in the media, and we all know that the NHS cannot currently cope with the increasing demand for mental health services. I offer both short and long-term counselling which respects you as an individual with your own unique set of experiences. And because I believe that counselling services should be accessible to all I also offer up to 50 per cent of my available time at a subsidised cost.
My approach to counselling is rooted in Gestalt psychotherapy. Gestalt is an optimistic existential therapy which believes that each person is born with the capacity to lead a successful creative life and to form rewarding relationships. However life may offer us roadblocks and setbacks that interfere with our natural development. I will explore with you the fixed patterns and core beliefs that may be depriving you now of a sense of aliveness and growth.
I also have a grounding in psychodynamic and person-centred approaches to therapy. I worked for two years in the NHS with clients diagnosed with personality disorders and have worked with the severely mentally ill on an NHS psychiatric ward. I have a keen appreciation that one style of counselling does not suit all.

Please call or email me if you would like to know more about me, or you want to tell me something about yourself, before we meet face to face. I do not charge for initial telephone conversations.
Our initial session will be a face to face assessment, usually for 50 minutes, so that we can both have some idea what it is you would like to gain from therapy. If you are a little unclear at this stage, that is perfectly fine too. After our initial session it is often best to take a few days to decide if you want to continue working with me.
i currently charge up to a maximum of £50 per 50 minute weekly session, depending on ability to pay. The initial assessment costs £10. I ask that you give me at least 24 hours notice of cancellations by email or text; otherwise the fee is still payable.
I offer open-ended therapy, that is, I do not set a time limit on how long we will work together, nor do I set you goals or homework. However I do find it useful to carry out a review every six weeks to check how we are doing with the issues you have brought and whether there are other issues that we also need to address. I recognise that you may also simply want to explore with me opportunities for personal growth and development.
In my Lewisham home practice, where play therapy is a possibility, I am also open to working with children and young people.
My City practice is located a 2 minute walk away from London Bridge underground station in Tooley Street. This practice caters for over 18s only.
My Lewisham practice has ample parking and is situated a 15 to 20 minute walk away from two overground stations. Bus services are also available.
