About us
Hello!
How are you? Fine? Ok? You've found yourself here today, and so, I am wondering if you are really ok?
Maybe it's something you find yourself saying to people every day. Maybe you've even convinced yourself that you're fine but underneath, you know you're not and so, you find yourself, reading this because, actually you’re not feeling all that good at the moment. Is that right?
We can feel anxious, worried, depressed, sad, angry, scared, stressed, lost and a whole lot of other things for a long time and still tell people (and ourselves) that we're ok, we're fine, it's nothing, it's no big deal, I'll get over it, I just need to pull my socks up.... and the list goes on. It can go on for week, months or years. But we're not really fine, are we? We avoid, drink, eat, smoke, get angry, get violent, stop going to work, overexercise, take drugs, stay in bed and do lots of other things to cope and 'get through' the best we can. But we never really feel any better.
Does this ring a bell? Maybe you recognise yourself in some of this? The thing is, this pattern of thinking, behaving and feeling can go on for a very long time. Not only does it affect our mental and emotional health but it starts affecting us physically too. Ever noticed how your body feels when you're stressed, anxious, depressed, overwhelmed, scared, low, angry, distressed etc.? Our thoughts, feelings, memories and situations can all affect our physical body too. It all starts adding up and, the longer things go on, the worse we feel and it affects our behaviour, relationships, how we feel about ourselves, our views, work and lots of other things in life.
We can then end up feeling like life is going around in circles, getting nowhere and not knowing how to change it.
Many people we work with in psychotherapy and counselling describe how this causes them to end up feeling stuck and unable to move: stuck and not knowing how to move in any direction, let alone move forward.
It’s at that point they get in touch with us here at Glasgow Therapy Rooms for some support, guidance and a listening ear.
Does that sound familiar? Even if it’s not exactly like how things are for you just now, you’re here, reading this page and so it seems that something is bothering you, hurting you, upsetting you or affecting you in some way.
We are really interested to find out what that is and discuss, with you, how we might be able to support you with that. How can we help you un-stick, move on or find a way out of the trap or difficult situation you find yourself in?
I don’t know the answer to that question right now (yuor therapist would chat with you first to find that out as we tailor therapy to each individual client - we're all different, after all). However, here’s some ways things you might need or want support with. You might need or want help and support with others things too, and that's absolutely fine too - we can help and support you with whatever is important to you.
Do any of these apply to you?
- Do you want to reduce and manage stress, anxiety, panic, tension or pressure?
- Do you experience low mood, depression, sadness or mood changes that affect your ability to do things each day or affect your quality of life?
- Do you find yourself worrying about certain situations, such as being in groups or crowds; or do think the worst outcome or imagine that things won't work out?
- Do you find it difficult to make decisions, put things off, go over and over things in your mind or find it hard to motivate yourself or get going?
- Does your health, or the health of others, worry or concern you a lot and you find that you can't stop thinking about it?
- Have you have developed certain habits or behaviours that help you to cope or feel safe at the time but that you know are causing problems in the long term?
- Perhaps you don’t like how you look or don't feel comfortable in your body and have found yourself changing how your eat, exercising more (or less) or avoiding other people? Maybe you avoid mirrors or check them a lot. Perhaps you feel down when you look in the mirror or get dressed in the morning?
* Is how you're feeling or what you're thinking is affecting your relationships?
- Is work (or lack of) is bothering you and you need some support in this area? Do you experience workplace stress? Maybe you experience bullying or feel overwhelmed at work?
- Has your relationship with food has changed. Do you find yourself restricting food, eating only certain food, or overeating and bingeing, often feeling out-of-control?
- Maybe you have some bigger questions in life and have found yourself wondering who you are, your meaning or purpose in life or questioning your identity or sexuality?
- Perhaps you have experienced some form of trauma or have experience of PTSD and need to talk to someone about this?
- Do you need some support from a dietitian and nutritionist? Mental and psychological health are linked with physical health and vice versa. We have a HCPC registered dietitian and nutritionist who can offer information, support and dietetic appointments to help get your physical health on track too.
Whatever the case might be (and it might be one not listed above), we are here to listen, support and help you improve life, a step at a time. There's no hurry, no pressure, no expectations and no talking about things you're not ready to talk about.
Our psychotherapists, counsellors and dietetians are patient, understanding, supportive, warm and go at your pace. You are in the driving seat in therapy.
However, we can't support you until YOU take the first step and decide to improve your life or address the problem(s) or concern(s) that's making your life difficult. You have to meet us in the middle somewhere, and that starts with you, getting in touch with us, to find out how we can help and support you.
Then, you can start working, in partnership with your therapist or counsellor, to improve life.
We can provide therapy and counselling in various forms including: in-person, online (e.g. Zoom), telephone and instant messaging or text-based therapy. We will shortly be offering Outdoor Therapy in the Paisley and Glasgow areas too.
We can provide services to adults over 18 years old. Two of our therapists can also offer therapy and counselling to children and young people between 12-18 years.
If you take the first step, and get in touch, we will take a step towards you too and walk alongside you on your therapy or counselling path.
I ask the question I started with….how are you? If the answer is ‘I’m not doing so well at the moment’, my colleagues and I encourage you take that first step and get in touch with us. What are you waiting for? What's stopping you? Go on, it's time! Take that step...take it today!
Best wishes,
Alexandra
