About me

I am Gill Whichelow, a Professionally Trained and Qualified Counsellor with many years experience. M.BACP Accredited, Fully Insured and CRB. checked.
My aim as a counsellor is to create a warm, empathic space within which issues and difficulties can be explored in confidence. I believe one of the key values of counselling lies in giving time and understanding to those aspects of our lives which, from time to time, cause us to feel we are being pushed beyond our limits.

Forming a relationship that reflects the individual nature of the client's personality, allowing them to work at their own pace, to help them find understanding and meaning, is a main priority in my work. I am confident that, working together, we can find a way for you to move forward with confidence and understanding into happier times.
Although my training includes a range of psychodynamic and humanistic approaches also CBT, I work according to the needs, lifestyle and culture of the individual, rather than imposing a specific technique. What guides my work more than anything else is my belief in the importance of the relationship between client and counsellor, which needs to be based on trust, mutual respect and the desire to work in partnership.

I have experience of working with clients from a range of different age groups, backgrounds and cultures and welcome cultural difference.

My private practice is located on Canvey Island, where I work with Individuals, Couples and young people. I offer prompt flexible appointments am/pm both weekdays and Saturday mornings.

People seek counselling for many different reasons. You may be experiencing problems within your personal relationships, at home or at work. You may have experienced a traumatic event in your life, such as a bereavement that has left you feeling lonely and anxious. You may feel depressed and not know why, or maybe you are just having difficulty coping with a past event and you just need someone to talk to.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have been a Qualified Professionally trained Counsellor for more than 10 years. I am also a trained and experienced CBT Practitioner.

As well as my work in my private practice, I have dedicated my time working in a Voluntary capacity as counsellor for both Canvey Community Children's Centre and the "St. Nicholas Family Centre", and also as a Bereavement Counsellor for Cruse Bereavement Care.

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.

Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.

All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
