“Loneliness does not come from having no people around you, but from being unable to communicate the things that seem important to you.” — Carl Jung
I am interested in listening and talking to you about what is troubling you, or just whatever is on your mind that you would like to explore and understand further.
Talking to the right psychotherapist in a confidential, non judgemental relationship can allow us to come to terms with loss, whether due to a bereavement, lost relationship or disappointment with aspects of one's past. Talking together about the present (and when relevant the past) can help us find ways forward in order for you to live your life more fully. I.e. my principle aim will be to help you help yourself by enhancing your self understanding. A deeper self understanding can lead to a change in how you view yourself, your life and/or your relationships leading to an improvement in your quality of life. Learning more about yourself can lead you to make different, perhaps more appropriate choices and decisions however small or large they may be.
My years working as a counsellor and psychotherapist in London, Tunbridge Wells and Leigh has provided me with a broad spectrum of experience. My earlier work in teaching and social work with children and adults whilst living in South America for many years, has given me the breadth of life experience and an appreciation of cultural differences on which my interest, training and practice as an analytical therapist is based. As an experienced practitioner I have worked with a wide range of clients for over thirteen years. I am experienced in working with adults and teenagers, and I can see children from ages of ten upwards.
My approach is mainly psychodynamic, however I work in ways that suit each individual concerned drawing upon my knowledge and skills in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mentalisation based therapies and existentialism.
I am fully qualified clinically and academically in Psychotherapy, Psychology and Counselling up to masters level. I work with children, teenagers and adults. I also offer academic tutoring and mentoring for counselling and psychotherapy students.
I offer therapy from my private practice in Leigh and in in Tunbridge Wells. I am also able to see patients in London near Waterloo.
I usually see patients once a week for psychodynamic therapy, each session lasting 50 minutes.
My training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy means that I am able to work with with you up to three times a week if you feel that you would like to work at a deeper level. I offer a minimum of a five pound reduction per session for those who would like to attend more than once a week.
I am also experienced in offering short-term therapy for a set number of sessions usually between six to twelve.
My particular areas of Interest and Experience
I am particularly experienced and committed to working with those who are experiencing relationship difficulties and/or anxiety and depression. This interest stemmed from my first degree in Psychology where in the final year I majored in looking at the causes and symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Another area of interest and extensive experience of mine, is seeing patients for therapy who may not be considered to be 'psychologically minded' such as those with aspergers and autism as well as those suffering from psychosis. One of the areas my MA research looked into was working psychodynamically with those with autistic traits who do not appear, at least at the commence of therapy, to be psychologically minded.
MAIN AREA OF SPECIALISM - HELPING PATIENTS FIND THE MOST BENEFICIAL FORM OF TREATMENT
It can be overwhelming to find the right therapist as there are so many types of therapy as well as counsellors and psychotherapists advertising their services, ranging from those who have embarked on relatively short trainings to psychotherapists with at least four years of intensive, rigorous training.
It is important for you to find the right therapist, and because of this my area of specialism is assessing clients to see which type of therapy may be the most appropriate for them. If in this first meeting, we consider together that me or my way of working may not be the most beneficial for you at this time, I have a network of qualified and experienced therapists I could refer you on to. This is always more preferable than 'randomly' choosing a therapist purely due to location or cost.
Training, qualifications & experience
Although the qualifications and training of a psychotherapist and a counsellor of course do not guarantee whether a particular practitioner is the right one for you, it is still a very important consideration to take into account.
I trained as a psychotherapist and counsellor at WPF therapy and hold the following professional qualifications:
- Advanced Clinical Post-Graduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy qualifying at Distinction level (WPF).
- Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling (WPF Therapy)
- MA in Psychoanalytic Studies & Psychodynamic Studies - Distinction (First class honours) - Roehampton University. My MA research project is in the process of being edited for publication in the British Journal of Psychotherapy and recommended for further doctoral research.
As finding the right therapist is so important for prospective clients, my chosen research subject looked at this in detail concentrating on the importance of the preliminary meeting/consultation.
- Post Graduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Theory & Practice, and graduated with Distinction Roehampton University.
- BSc (Hons) Psychology, University of London including a First Class Dissertation on Anxiety and Depression, (CBT perspective).
