Gerard Preshur, Reg. MBACP Counsellor/ Psychotherapist/ BACP Conference Speaker.
Hello, my name is Gerard Preshur and I offer face to face counselling in a safe and welcoming setting which is easily accessible. Location of venues for appointments can be discussed and tailored round your needs to ease any concerns about privacy. My approach is to work within your needs and find possible solutions which will help you move forward in life.
As an accredited member of the BACP I adhere to their ethical guidelines. I hold professional insurance and have received enhanced clearance from Access NI to work with children and young people.
I am an integrative child/person centred Counsellor/Therapist. This means my counselling approach is tailored towards working with each individual or young person and their unique set of needs. I employ a range of techniques, well as talking to encourage children and young people to express themselves creatively and safely so that they can work on the issues that they are struggling with.
My work includes supporting counselling students with they required hours of therapy.
I offer a safe and caring environment whereby adults and young people can explore your emotions without fear of criticism or blame. Reflecting on what is happening increases self-awareness, helps to make sense of situations and improves relationships.
Unresolved issues create stress and anxiety and are often better discussed in a non judgemental environment to enable you to make decisions that may change how you feel. Counselling will provide you with the space to explore these issues offering complete confidentiality throughout.
Since becoming a fully-qualified therapist 14 years ago, I have helped with a number of problems such as anger, bereavement, relationship issues, stress, anxiety and panic attacks, trauma, low self-esteem, family breakdown, depression and sexual orientation. I can help you to explore what is causing you to feel and behave the way you do, making connections with how past events may be affecting your present life and identify any unhelpful patterns that are preventing you from living a more fulfilling life.
In the past I have worked managing and supporting counsellors on a suicide prevention telephone helpline and have many years working in telephone counselling. This is always useful for clients who for different reasons find face to face counselling difficult or inconvenient.
I am presently working in a schools setting I have a number of year’s experience of working with children and young people having been a School Counsellor in some of the leading grammar schools in Northern Ireland for the past 11 years as well as in secondary and integrated schools. I have worked on a short, medium and long term basis with young people and adults, and have in the past worked with young people and adults held within the prison service supporting them with many issues in they lives.
More recently presenting work shops for the BACP CYP conference in London working with Gender Identity.
