Geoff Thompson. Family, Relationship & Couples Counsellor
Do you find it difficult to communicate any more?
Do you argue constantly but don’t know why?
Do you feel alone in the relationship?
Do you feel that you no longer have anything in common with your partner?
Do you feel that you are drifting apart?
Do you feel that the intimacy is no longer there ?
These are just some examples of the problems that are typically presented in couples or relationship counselling. I have come across many more in over twenty years experience of working as a counsellor.
The problem might be with your spouse if you are married, with your partner in a relationship of whatever orientation, with a family member, with a work colleague or with somebody whose friendship means a lot to you. My experience is wide and varied.
My aim is to help you explore your relationship as it currently is and to identify what is getting in the way of it being satisfying for each of you. They key issue is to identify the extent to which each of you see the potential for the relationship to continue and the extent to which you are committed to it doing so. The challenge is to identify how the relationship might need to be different and help you work towards not only making the difference happen but sustaining it over time.
My experience is that it is very hard for people to overcome problems in their relationship on their own because they are part of the problem that they are trying to solve. A relationship counsellor, who is completely independent of the problem, is uniquely placed to help you find a way forward. That is what I do.
