In our EMDR clinics our therapist endeavour to create a therapeutic atmosphere that begins a deep healing process for our clients who are new to psychological treatment and those who feel stuck in traditional therapy. EMDR is an abbreviation for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a phased treatment approach developed by American psychologists Dr Francine Shapiro. It is a remarkable cost-effective, non-invasive evidence-based psychological treatment method used to heal the symptoms of trauma across all ages, genders, and cultures. It facilitates the natural healing abilities of the brain. Most of the time the brain processes disturbing experiences without our awareness. However, this healing process may become overloaded when an individual is severely traumatized either by an overwhelming experience (e.g. death of loved one, car accident, rape, natural disaster) or by being exposed to recurring distress (e.g. combat, childhood neglect, sexual/physical abuse). This can mean that the memories and feelings associated with the event(s) will be stored in the brain unprocessed. It seems the unprocessed memory get “chained” in the nervous system with the original picture, sounds, thoughts and feelings hence the continued distress. EMDR helps to activate and assists the brain’s natural healing abilities with great efficacy, thus helping to move the disturbing material through the nervous system, allowing the person to heal more completely. The ability of our brain/body/mind to achieve this type of resolution is referred to as an “Adaptive Information Processing” system or AIP.
EMDR uses a three-pronged protocol:
1) Past events that have laid the groundwork for symptoms are processed into a neutral state;
2) Current circumstances that trigger distress are targeted; and
3) Future events are targeted to assist the client in acquiring the skills needed for adaptive functioning in the present and future
You should consider EMDR if: You suffered a trauma such as: an accident, a rape, sexual abuse, child abuse, physical abuse, the death of a love one, an assault, or you experience a pattern of unsuccessful relationships.

Other CBT approaches that influence our work includes, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, which was created and developed by the American psychotherapist and psychologist Albert Ellis and Cognitive Therapy developed by Aaron T. Beck, M.D. Dr Beck is generally regarded as the father of cognitive therapy.
With the power of CBT, we will work with you to capitalize on your strengths and help you identify and move beyond unhelpful thinking and behavioural patterns generating emotional and behavioural problems. We won't dwell on your past or talk endlessly about your problems, but will instead use various empirically supported CBT techniques to step back from your issues and explore new options and beliefs. Then you'll practice these new perspectives and strategies at home in your real life until they feel more natural.
