About me

Do you need some support to get your life back on track? Has illness or disability taken over? Or perhaps overwhelming emotions are making it difficult to cope? My name is Dr Freddie Byrne and I'm here to help.

I am an experienced and fully registered Clinical Psychologist with a special interest in supporting people who are living with (themselves or through family members) serious illness such as stroke, dementia, cancer, diabetes or traumatic brain injury.

I am currently working with individuals and families from my consulting rooms in Guildford and West Byfleet, Surrey.

Difficulties I can help with:

I believe in working in a respectful and strength focused way, to help people to feel better and live a life that is rich and meaningful. Whilst I see everyone I work with as unique individuals and not in terms of a label or diagnosis, people often come to therapy with difficulties that are sometimes referred to in the following ways:

  • Adjustment to serious illness or disabilities
  • Depression, low mood or feeling sad
  • Anxiety, panic, phobias or worry
  • Stress
  • Anger or other emotional problems
  • Sleeping difficulties
  • Adjustment following serious illness, such as stroke or brain injury
  • Relationship issues

If you are unsure if I can help, I would invite me to give me a call and talk it over on the phone. If I'm not the best person to help, I will always try and recommend the right service or professional for you.

Training, qualifications & experience

As a clinical psychologist, I am able to draw on a range of evidenced based psychological approaches to suit the needs of the individual, couple or family. I take a particular interest in how difficulties such as illness or disability impact on people's relationships and believe in working in a respectful and strength focused way.

The specific therapy models that I use most frequently are systemic therapy, narrative therapy, motivational interviewing and cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT).

Alongside private practice, I currently work at a University on a teaching programme for clinical psychologists. Previously I have worked in a neuro rehabilitation service for adults and young people who experienced life changing illnesses such as stroke, brain injury, Guillen-Barre syndrome, and other neurological problems. I worked with both individuals and families to support adjustment to changes in relationships and life circumstances, as well as to learn strategies to manage cognitive and emotional difficulties.

  • Doctorate in Clinical Psychology - University of Surrey
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Working systemically with individuals, families and organisations - Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust
  • Post Graduate Certificate in Low Intensity Psychological Interventions - University of Birmingham
  • Masters of Research in Clinical Psychology
  • HCPC Registered/Accredited
