About me

Covid-19 and therapy sessions

Since the beginning of my career as a psychotherapist, my priority has always been to ensure that I provide a safe space for the therapeutic work to take place. In light of this, and due to the ever-changing nature of the Covid pandemic that we are navigating together, I have taken the decision to offer my services on an online only basis for the foreseeable future.

Hello, I'm Foteini

Thank you for visiting my page. I am a relational, integrative psychotherapist practicing from Woking, Surrey.

I have a special interest in working with trauma and loss and I have worked extensively with clients that suffer from anxiety, depression, feelings of worthlessness, emptiness and inadequacy, co-dependency issues and self-destructive behaviours. My experience also includes supporting individuals who are identical or fraternal twins.

At the heart of my work lies the conviction of the healing power that human connection holds. Our primary need for relationships are indispensable to a healthy sense of self, so when our world of relationships become neglectful in childhood or non-reciprocal in adulthood, then our mental well-being becomes thwarted. In this sense, whilst relationships can cause human suffering, they can potentially heal and restore that which has been neglected or broken within us.

Utilizing the hopeful message that “no matter what has happened to us in the past we can heal in the presence of a safe and supportive other”, I strongly believe that finding the right therapist, who can provide a nurturing, holding space, can help you resolve emotional pain, traumatic memories, grief and sadness.

I follow a strengths-based, de-pathologizing approach in my work, as I believe that self-destructive behaviours are in actuality creative forms of communication and coping, that are trying to give voice to what has happened to us, in an attempt to resolve painful and traumatic experiences that do not yet feel resolved.

If you feel that my words resonate with you in some way, and would like to see if my services can be of help to you then I encourage you to contact me either by phone (07511 475594) or email (foteini.palyvou@gmail.com) to schedule an initial assessment that will give you the chance to see if you feel that we are a good enough fit to work together. You can also visit my website (foteinipalyvou.com) to read more about my work.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a professionally qualified Integrative Psychotherapist and a registered member of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

My initial professional qualification in the field of mental health was a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from University of Surrey.

I completed a foundation year at Regent's University London where I studied the fundamentals of psychotherapy and counselling.

I received my MSc in Integrative Psychotherapy (validated by Middlesex University) and a Clinical Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy from Metanoia Institute after a comprehensive, four-year training.

My training also includes completing courses in trauma, attachment and neuroscience, youth counselling, bereavement and eating disorders.

My clinical experience includes working as a psychotherapist in the NHS, charities, educational organisations and private practice. I have provided clinical treatment for adults at Portsmouth Counselling Service, Cruse Bereavement and Metanoia Counselling & Psychotherapy Services. I have also provided therapy to young people as a youth counsellor at Youth Counselling Service-NHS, and as a student counsellor at Farnborough College of Technology. My work in the above settings included supporting individuals with issues of childhood and adult trauma, bereavement and loss, shame and low self-esteem, work related problems, relationship problems, issues relating to identity, purpose and meaning, sexuality and gender, and current relational struggles.

I have over 13 years’ experience of treating anxiety, depression, feelings of worthlessness, and self-destructive behaviours such as eating disorders and addictions. My professional experience also includes supporting individuals who are identical or fraternal twins, and who have found their twinship to be both a source of happiness and distress.
