I know that it can be a daunting and scary time when we find ourselves having to look for a counsellor. It appears to be like sticking a pin in a map. Just trust your gut instinct as you browse the directory.
I believe the foundation of any counselling is the working relationship, which enables exploration and understanding of the issues which prompted your search of the Counselling Directory.
I have worked as a counsellor since qualifying in 1999, providing Counselling and Counselling Supervision in the Durham area. My initial training was in the Humanistic Integrative model, (an approach that systematically considers the whole person - mind, body and spirit). Since qualifying I have extensively widened my knowledge and experience, to include EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing - a treatment designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories), Sand and Art therapy and working with the inner child and the subconscious. I understand that we, as humans, are all individuals and need the counselling experience to be individual and tailor-made to gain the most from our sessions.
I have mainly worked providing counselling to the NHS in GP practices in Bishop Auckland and Willington, but have also worked with ASCA (Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse) and MIND mental health charity, alongside my private work.
I have had feedback throughout the years from clients and colleagues that I have integrity and a down to earth, calm style of working. I believe in making the counselling experience as comfortable as possible, even when exploring difficult issues and yes, dare I say, sometimes even enjoyable.

Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Accredited Register Scheme
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
