It has been an honour to work for the past 12 years developing and leading the first trauma informed Occupational Health Service within the NHS. During this time I was a member of the Scottish Government Trauma Advisory Steering Group influencing the Mental Health Strategy ten year vision. This vision promotes parity between physical and mental health. This is because it is now known that most diseases start with stress, distress and trauma.
We need to work together to increase knowledge about mental health and encourage compassion. Mental health is not weakness, it is related to what happens to us. For example biological, psychological and social influences.
I have presented at many Universities about trauma informed services. This is because we now know that depression, social anxiety, Generalised anxiety, panic, phobias and addictions are all a consequence of trauma
I have taken early retirement from leading this service to work independently and have a special interest in the strength of vulnerability, resiliency and post traumatic growth.
