About me

Life is full of change, whether we choose it or not. Sometimes change is imposed on us and we struggle to adapt. Sometimes we know we need to make changes in our lives, but we don’t know how.

I'm a fully qualified counsellor with many years' experience helping clients with a wide range of emotional and psychological issues.

Perhaps you’re struggling with anxiety, low mood or depression, or experiencing issues stemming from your childhood or a past trauma. Maybe you are feeling challenged by a transition in your life, finding personal relationships difficult in some way or experiencing relationship breakdown or divorce. Or perhaps you’re simply feeling stuck or directionless in your life. If so, I would be glad to hear from you.

I offer a warm, welcoming and confidential space for you to talk openly about whatever is concerning you. Together, we can explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours so you can work towards a better understanding of yourself and others. You’ll find me curious, open-minded, perceptive and collaborative. I approach all my work with a sense of hope and possibility.

I have a particular interest in working with clients who are experiencing difficulties in their sex lives, or who are exploring questions around sex, sexual expression, sexuality and identity. I have specialist training in this area, including a post-qualifying certificate in psychosexual studies.

Please see my website at https://fionakeltcounselling.co.uk for more information about my general and psychosexual counselling services.

I work with individual adults aged 18 and over. Clients of all genders, sexualities, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, ethnicities and personal experiences are very welcome. I have a particular interest in men’s mental health.

I work from a therapy room in Edinburgh EH9 (Newington/Mayfield/Southside area). I also offer online therapy.

Training, qualifications & experience

My Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling (with Distinction) is from the University of Edinburgh, where I trained in both the person-centred and psychodynamic approaches to therapy. I am particularly interested in childhood and early attachment experiences, and how the past impacts us today.

I have been seeing clients in my private counselling practice for over 5 years. I worked as a counsellor for a number of years in charitable and third sector counselling organisations in Edinburgh including PF Counselling and The Next Chapter. My past experience also includes working at the University of Edinburgh Student Counselling Service where I offered short-term counselling to students with a wide range of issues, and at the Edinburgh Crisis Centre supporting those in mental health crisis.

I also hold a post-qualifying Certificate in Psychosexual Studies from Tavistock Relationships in London, which informs my work supporting clients with questions or challenges around sex, sexual expression in all its forms, sexuality and identity. I've undertaken training at the Centre for Psychosexual Health in London in sex after trauma, and also have specialist training around kink, non-monogamy and polyamory. I have particular experience working with clients experiencing relationship breakdown or divorce, and additional training in working with infidelity, its causes and impacts.

Before training as a counsellor, I qualified as a lawyer. After a brief period in private legal practice, I worked for a decade in a charitable organisation supporting clients with workplace and employment issues, with a particular focus on equalities and anti-discrimination work. I have also set up and run my own successful business.

I am a registered member of BACP and hold full professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
