Fi Garrard MBACP counsellor
I am a outdoor Counsellor and Ecotherapist with over 10 years experience counselling people both indoors and outside in nature
I meet with people who come for support with all sorts of different problems such as depression, anxiety, bereavement, addictions, post natal depression PTSD, ADHD, ADD, bi-polar and other diagnosed mental health problems, relationship problems, worry about climate change or those who come for personal development.
I am qualified and I practice Person Centred Counselling which is, simply put where i listen deeply and reflect back on what i hear someone say. This can be very powerful for people to feel really heard but because sessions are lead by you it is at your own pace. I mostly see people outside in nature but i do see people at my home and i use a room in Truro. I meet people at the beach, in a wood or up a hill depending on how they feel or what the weather is like. We can also meet in private outside places arranged by me. We can walk for a little while, sit or do both.
I counsel children and adolescents outside where we play in nature, build dens, have fires and sit in trees amongst other things. I am particularly passionate about offering Counselling to children diagnosing with ADHD, ADD and those who find it difficult to fit into the 'normal' label.
In my experience being outside and Counselling in nature is gentler than normal indoor Counselling and more effective. When people talk about their painful experiences outside in nature it seems to be less intense and easier for people to talk. I have noticed people seem to find it easier to be themselves and feel their feelings but also feel less judged. It seems to me that it is not just me supporting the people i counsel but all the other beings we are with, like the birds, the sea, the insects and the trees that help the person feel and heal from the issues they have so they can then go on to implement real change in their lives.
I am a member of the British association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists and have been working in outdoor and ecotherapy for over 20 years.

Other areas of counselling I deal with
I interested in the field of Ecopsychology which recognises not just the relationships we have with other humans but our relationships and connections to nature and the other than human beings in the world. I am aware of the collective pain and fear we experience about climate change and the increasing feeling that the problem is too big for us as individuals to tackle. But i believe that it is through experiencing that fear and pain of the world, of the extinction of species, of all the natural disasters that keep happening that we release our stuckness in being able to act in a positive way to care for out home, planet earth.
