About me

Welcome to my profile page

I would like to tell you a little about myself and the services I offer so you can decide if I might be a good fit for you.

I am an accredited Human Givens Counsellor and Psychotherapist based in the heart of Kent. My priority is to provide you with a calm, empathetic environment in which you can share whatever you want to discuss, explore your feelings and help you find solutions. Your problems may relate to relationships, past experiences, current life challenges, issues at work, or they may not seem to be connected to anything. Working together I can help you deal with your current situation, identify and change unhelpful patterns of behaviour and help you build a personal ‘tool kit’ of skills and knowledge with achievable goals to help you maintain your well-being into the future.

What are ‘The Human Givens’?
I studied a number of traditional counselling and therapy techniques (such as person-centred, CBT, psychodynamic) before I discovered the Human Givens; based on our emotional needs, combined with elements of proven therapies (such as cognitive therapy, behavioural therapy, interpersonal therapy, solution focused approaches, motivational interviewing, reflective listening and hypnotherapy), simple language and the latest neuroscience, it is an incredibly effective form of therapy.

At the heart of the HG approach is the principle that we all have emotional needs, just as we have physical needs, such as our need for security, to be part of a community, or to have a sense of purpose. If our needs are met in balance, we flourish. However, if our needs are not met, or we misuse our natural ‘resources’ (for example our imagination, rational thinking) we can find ourselves emotionally distressed; these can manifest in many different ways, for example as depression, addictive behaviour, anxieties or phobias. By looking at what is missing, or being misused, we can find ways to better meet your needs.

It’s essential that you find the right therapist for you so I offer an initial no-obligation 20 minute call to explore how we could work together and for you to decide if you feel comfortable with me. If you would like to continue then we can agree a date and time for our first session. Each session lasts for one hour, either on-line or face to face. The number of sessions you have will depend on what you need – the average is 4-6 however some clients need more for more complex problems, some less. At this time I can offer socially distanced face to face sessions if you feel comfortable, otherwise sessions can be held over Skype, Zoom or as a phone call. In some instances I can make home visits.

If you would like to have an informal chat please contact me, either by text message or by email. If I am unable to reply immediately I will get back to you within 24 hours.

Areas of expertise
The flexible approach enables me to help clients with a broad range of problems and challenges, including stress or anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, recovery from serious illness and workplace issues. I work with a number of regional organisations specialising in cancer and addiction support so have a particular interest in helping those recovering from long-term illness and those impacted by the addictive behaviour of a family member or friend.

Prior to practicing as a counsellor and psychotherapist I spent many years in the corporate world, often taking the role of team leader, coach or mentor. I experienced first-hand many of the work place challenges that I help my clients with such as stress, anxiety, workplace bullying, loss of confidence and redundancy, to name a few. I also run mental health sessions and workshops (at present on-line) based on the Human Givens approach to support employees and team leaders.
