About me

Hello, I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist with 20 years experience of working with adults and young people (13 years and over) in a variety of NHS settings. I have extensive experience in working with people with a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties and distress. For the last four years I have combined my part-time NHS work in Adult Mental Health with working independently.

Types of problems I can help with

Types of emotional difficulties i can help with include low mood, anxiety (including Generalised Anxiety Disorder), obsessive-compulsive problems, eating issues, PTSD and managing the effects of trauma and/or abuse, low self-esteem, poor body image, adjustment difficulties following stressful life events, as well as interpersonal problems.

Types of therapy offered

Therapy offered is evidence-based (working to NICE guidance) and tailored to meet the individual’s needs and goals they want to work towards. Approaches I am trained to offer include Eye Movement De-Sensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy including Trauma-focussed CBT, Compassion-based therapy, Mindfulness, Acceptance & Commitement Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).

What to expect from therapy

Length, frequency and type of therapy offered will depend on the person’s needs. This will be discussed at the outset of therapy and reviewed regularly. Examples of how therapy can be helpful include providing support to help a person explore areas of difficulty, develop more effective ways of coping with distress or worry, or find ways of adjusting following a time of stress. In all my work, I aim to build a trusting, collaborative and empathic relationship with the individual, being respectful of and guided by their own understanding of their difficulties and what they think will be helpful, as well as taking into account the person's own strengths and resources.

Practicalities

I offer appointments from two bases: the Tower Clinic in Cookridge and Ilkley. I accept self-referrals and those funded through medical insurance. I am registered with several medical insurers including Bupa, Aviva, WPA and Healix.

If you would like more information please visit my website www.fionabentley.org.uk or contact me to arrange a free telephone consultation to find out if I could help you. If we agree, we can arrange an assessment appointment where we can discuss your needs and ways therapy might be helpful, in more detail.
