About me

Welcome to 'Hope Matters Therapy', my private practice.

With much experience as a UKCP accredited Gestalt psychotherapist and BACP accredited Integrative counsellor, I offer warm, confidential therapeutic support to adults, couples, and teens (aged 12+).

I support people in wide ranging issues, including:

  • challenging marital, family, or other, relationship difficulties
  • loss and bereavement
  • low self esteem and confidence
  • unfinished business

Any one of us can struggle with our mental health at times. This, and trauma, are areas I am especially passionate about working with, including:

  • anxiety, stress, panic attacks, phobias, etc
  • depression
  • difficulties resulting from attachment issues, or trauma or abuse, e.g. post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); dissociation
  • monitoring medication prescribed for mental health reasons

I offer both long and short term therapy.

After a free initial 15 minute meeting, the first session is a chance for you to explore the issues bringing you to therapy at this time. It allows us to begin getting to know each other and to discuss your hopes, fears and goals.

Goals may include:

  • gaining greater self-awareness, compassion and acceptance
  • finding new resources, choices, coping strategies and hope

We will review our work together regularly. Endings are an important part of the process, so we will plan together for an ending that is satisfying and supportive to you.

As a Christian, I enjoy sharing journeys with people from all faith and spiritual backgrounds, and from none. I am often told I have a deep level of empathy and understanding for others.

Finally...as an ancient Chinese proverb says,

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step".

If you feel ready to step out on that journey and would like to find a fellow traveller to accompany you, then I look forward to hearing from you.

Warmly,

Felicity

https://www.willowscounselling.org.uk/

My Gestalt training reflects my commitment to developing a strong therapeutic relationship. I work holistically, for example, helping you notice and pay attention to sensations arising within your body, as being in tune with our bodies is both supportive generally, and a valuable part of healing trauma.

I also draw from: Creative therapy; Transactional Analaysis (TA); Mindfulness; Sensorimotor psychotherapy; Compassion Focussed Therapy; Psychoeducation; Neuroscience; Polyvagal Theory.

My continued professional development training includes:

- Diploma in Contemporary Trauma Practice (Relational Change)

- Couples counselling

- Working with children and adolescents

- Ecotherapy

- Certificate in Supervision, Centre for Supervision and Team Development (CSTD) Bath.

Non-related qualifications:

- B Ed (Hons) in Teaching

- Post Graduate Diploma in Special Educational Needs (Visual Impairment)

I am a member of the following professional bodies:

  • BACP (British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists), as a Registered and accredited member (MBACP Accred)
  • UKCP (United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapists), as an Accredited Psychotherapist

  • EAGT (European Association for Gestalt Therapy)

A little more about me...

Training as a psychotherapist allowed me to become more informed and reflective about my work. My five year training included two NHS based mental health placements, which gave me important insight into mental health conditions, medication and services available. This experience supports me to work with more complex issues including trauma, attachment and personality adaptations. (www.nhs.uk/conditions/Psychotherapy)

In addition to my private practice, I have also been:

- a senior peripatetic counsellor, and clinical supervisor, with TIC+, a Gloucestershire charity offering counselling to young people aged 9 - 21 years.

- a volunteer counsellor  (5 years) with Willows Counselling Service in Swindon, where I gained a wealth of training and experience in working with trauma, dissociation and disrupted attachment.

Currently, I am also working as a residential facilitator with counselling students at the London School of Theology.

Previously, I worked as a primary teacher, before specialising in working with young people registered blind or visually impaired.

I named my private practice, 'Hope Matters Therapy' because of my deep belief that for all of us as human beings, being able to find and hold onto hope is an essential part of our well being.

Central to my work as a therapist, I am a wife, and a mother to three adult children, my youngest of whom was adopted internationally. Today, my family today is becoming ever more multicultural, with five different countries being represented, reflecting my love for difference and diversity.

To relax, I enjoy walking my two Romanian rescue dogs and learning from them about survival, learning to trust again, healing from pain and unconditional love.

I live and work from the beautiful countryside on the fringes of Malvern, a base from where I can also meet people outside and allow nature to support therapeutic health and wholeness.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I am passionate about working with:

  • Survivors of trauma, abuse and disrupted attachment.
  • Personality diagnoses (e.g. borderline, narcissistic and schizoid). I prefer to call these personality 'adaptations' or 'disrupted attachment issues' as see them as arising, through no fault of our own, from relationships often in early life. I can offer you support with these adaptations in a relational, non-shaming way.
  • Couples
  • Young people ages 12 - 18 years.
  • Counsellors, including students, wanting their own therapy.
  • Clergy, ministers of religion.
  • Cultural diversity.
  • Spirituality.
  • Using outdoor space where nature supports the healing journey.
