About me

Hi, I’m Emma Swaisland, a psychotherapist currently working online via Zoom, Skype or FaceTime, and by telephone in south London and north Surrey.

I am passionate about the power of psychotherapy to empower and heal, having experienced and shared the change and growth possible in this process many times.

What to expect from counselling:

It’s perfectly normal to experience some level of distress – we wouldn’t be human otherwise. But there are times when we can feel overwhelmed or vulnerable and our thoughts, behaviour and emotions dominate us in an unhelpful and sometimes destructive way. This is where talking to a professional, qualified therapist can make all the difference. As your therapist, I’ll help you share your problems and gain perspective about the things that are troubling you. Together we’ll identify what might be stopping you from functioning well, reaching your potential, or enjoying healthy relationships, and we’ll explore what could work to improve your situation. Therapy can take place over the short term or it can be open ended. I’m experienced in both and what works best for you is something we’ll discuss during our first meeting.

My approach:

Broadly, my approach is relational: I provide a therapeutic relationship which supports you whilst you safely examine your experience and feelings, learn strategies for coping, explore your options for change and adapt to the things you perhaps cannot change.  I help a wide range of individuals who may be experiencing one or many symptoms or issues with an integrative approach, drawing on theories and techniques from a range of psychotherapeutic models. I believe different approaches help different people at different times. Your presenting problems, desired outcomes and past experience of therapy are also important factors. Within a confidential, non-judgemental setting, I’ll work to help you move towards a more productive, authentic way of being.

Training, qualifications & experience

My qualifications & experience:

I graduated from Roehampton University with a BACP-accredited Masters degree in Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy. As well as running my own practice, I have experience working in an NHS setting delivering IAPT counselling services at a GP Practice, and for charitable organisations and specialist bereavement services. Prior to this, I had a career in publishing spanning 20 years, working with publications and authors often in the fields of psychology and self-help.

I’m a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, (BACP), one of the main professional bodies in the UK representing therapists, defining standards and promoting expertise. I adhere to the principles of practice outlined in the BACP’s Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions, (July 2018).

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
