Unlike standard psychotherapy and counselling, dramatherapy uses a creative expressive approach to working through difficult feelings and life experiences. This can be especially useful if you have tried a talking therapy before and feel that the problems are still present, or find it easier to express yourself through art, music or any other creative mediums than just through talking about things. Dramatherapy will involve some talking too, but the emphasis is usually on how the issues can be explored creatively in each session to promote change. No previous experience or confidence in drama or creative activities is needed and you will never be made to feel uncomfortable or asked to do anything that you don't want to. I see children from age 4-18 as well as adults.
With over 8 years experience of working as a dramatherapist in schools, clinical settings and in private practice, I am currently working privately with children and adults with a wide range of issues. I also work for a CAMHS partnership organisation working with children and adolescents with varying mental health issues.
I am a fully qualified clinical supervisor and also offer supervision to other creative arts therapists and those working in the helping professions. I am the founder of the Leap Frog Kids Therapy Service, a dramatherapy in education service across the North West.
What is Dramatherapy?
Dramatherapy is a form of psychotherapy which uses the medium of drama, story and play and may include aspects of movement, art and sometimes music. It can include verbal and non-verbal elements. Metaphor and symbol play a key role in Dramatherapy. It is an integrative in approach, however the process is largely underpinned by Jungian psychoanalytical theory.
Dramatherapy can help you to explore difficult feelings, emotions, bad habits and negative behaviours.
What Can You Expect from One to One Dramatherapy Sessions?
Sessions may include fictional stories and myths, creating new stories, using objects, puppets and masks, drama games, character and role work, movement and sound body work, rhythm, image, drawing and much more.
Through the dramatic exploration you are encouraged to make connections, with the support of myself, beginning to establish a more balanced version of yourself and make lasting positive changes.
Dramatherapy is not about performing, and you do not need to have any previous experience or even interest in drama to attend sessions. Emphasis is on process and exploration, and I regularly see clients who suffer from shyness, anxieties and confidence issues.
Private one to one Dramatherapy sessions are 50 minutes long. I currently offer one to one sessions for both children and adults in Frodsham.
