About me

Sometimes things can feel utterly overwhelming. At these times we can feel anxious, lonely, depressed, trapped, frightened and confused. I’m Emma, I can support you to work through these difficult feelings and find a way forward.

I am a Person-Centred counsellor, this means that I work with you, my counselling sessions are client-led. I will offer you a safe, non-judgemental space to talk and explore your thoughts and feelings so that together, we can find a way to challenge them or learn to accept them.

To enhance my 3 year practitioner counsellor training I have also done some additional training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution Focussed Brief Therapy (SFBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Rewind Trauma Therapy and might use elements of these and other techniques if I feel it is appropriate for you and our work together.

I am a Trauma-Informed Therapist, this means that I have an in-depth understanding of the way in which the body and mind reacts, adapts and changes in response to developmental trauma and other traumatic events.

I am also a Social Justice Informed Therapist.  This means that I am aware of power, politics and the impact of these on mental health. Understanding and exploring systemic issues of racism, sexism, ableism and classism and their impact in a therapeutic setting can be incredibly empowering, and I can support you with this.

I am an Accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). The BACP is a professional body in the UK for Counselling and Psychotherapy.  As an Accredited member, I have demonstrated to the BACP that I adhere to their ethical guidelines and have met their higher standard of ethical and competent practice.

Specialisms

Having published research in Maternal Mental Health, and currently completing a PhD in this area, I have a particular interest in working with mothers and mothers to be. If you are a mother of any age who has experienced confusing feelings towards motherhood, or around being a mother, I can help.

I have also worked at a charity which is dedicated to the Prevention of Suicide. If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide, I can help you to keep safe from these often frightening and overwhelming thoughts whilst supporting you to understand where they come from and what you can do to move past them.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Further information

What to expect from a first appointment?

Your initial appointment will last for an hour and will give you an opportunity to find out if you feel comfortable working with me.

It's so important that you find the right 'fit' for counselling.  Not all counsellors will meet your expectations, you might not feel comfortable with some therapists, and yet with others it may feel just right.

During this initial appointment, we will discuss why you wanted to come to counselling and what you would like to change or gain from the sessions.

Together we will discuss how we might work together to achieve your counselling goals and any other questions or concerns that you might have about the therapeutic process.

If you book in with me I will send you some information about the way that I work before the session, you can read through this before you come, or we can discuss it together during our initial hour together.

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

Unfortunately, I work in a listed building with stairs and no lift. If you are somebody that isn't able to use stairs please let me know when booking an appointment and I will see if there are any ground floor rooms available.
