About me

Life can be challenging and at times we can all feel in need of support. Counselling gives you the space to explore feelings and reflect upon your life in a safe confidential and non-judgemental environment.  I use various approaches, as well as drawing on my years of experience in  mental health and wellbeing in order to support you in finding solutions to current challenges. I also have 20 years of experience in working with individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

First steps:

First contact me through telephone or email and arrange an initial session at a time that suits you. The first session will usually last 50-60minites and will involve some discussion about what the counselling process involves. You will have the opportunity to share what you hope to achieve from counselling and your current circumstances. If you feel that you would like to continue with counselling then we can arrange another appointment and take it from there.

Training, qualifications & experience

2005: Bsc (Honours) Applied Psychology (University of Ulster) 2:1

2012: Diploma in Counselling (University of Ulster) - with Commendation

2017: Level 5 Diploma in Leadership in Health and Social Care (Adults Management) City and Guilds

I have worked for 14 years in mental health and wellbeing facilitating therapeutic group work, as well as individual support. Through this work and through life experience I have developed an understanding of the impact of mental illness and emotional distress and supporting individuals in overcoming these challenges.

During this time I have taken part in continuous training including Applied Suicide intervention, Keeping adults safe and child protection, coaching and mentoring, Grief Trauma and the Helping relationship, Introduction to Reminiscence and Life Story work.

Prior to working in mental health, I worked with children with autism both in home, school and community settings. I have experience of family work and have also worked as a counsellor to individuals who have a diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder. I have a great understanding and empathy for individuals who have autism and their families.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
