About me
Hi! I’m Elspeth, an experienced counsellor and accredited BACP member providing one-to-one counselling to adults and young people aged 13 and over. Face-to-face counselling sessions are offered indoors in Berwick-upon-Tweed or outdoors in Berwick and the surrounding areas. Video and telephone appointments are available throughout the UK.
My core training is in the person-centred approach and I work from an integrative perspective. This simply means that the way that we work together will always be informed by you, and I may draw on a range of approaches, strategies or techniques to help you make sense of your thoughts and feelings and move forward in the way that you choose, at a pace which suits you.
Key to the counselling process being effective is the relationship we develop. As your counsellor, I will not offer you advice or solutions, or tell you how to behave or think. Instead, I will provide a safe, confidential and empathic space where you can explore and make sense of whatever is going on for you, without judgement.
I also understand that deciding to see a counsellor can be a big, and sometimes daunting, step to take, and it's essential that you find someone who is a good fit for you. With this in mind, I offer a free "no obligation" 20 minute consultation before booking appointments, so that I can find out a bit about you and what you’d like to gain from therapy. This will also give you the opportunity to see whether you'd be happy working with me and to ask any questions you may have.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have worked in the 3rd sector as well as in private practice, counselling both adults and young people. My qualifications are as follows:
- Level 5 Diploma - Counselling
- Level 5 Certificate - Counselling Children & Young People
- Level 5 Certificate - Relational Supervision
- Certificate in Online & Telephone Counselling
- BUPA Approved Therapist
Extensive CPD in many areas including trauma/trauma-informed practice, working creatively, neurodiversity, suicide and self-harm, domestic abuse, outdoor therapy, Internal Family Systems, somatic working, pregnancy & baby loss, bereavement.
Member organisations
school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
