Hello I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist (BPS/HCPC) and an accredited EMDR therapist. I offer talking therapies and specialise in trauma work using EMDR (eye movement desentisation and reprocessing) and other therapeutic approaches.
I can help with a great variety of mental health challenges and work with an integrative framework that draws on 'third wave' CBT approaches (mindfulness based CBT - compassion focussed CBT and ACT), EMDR and what I have learned through working with adults in secondary care NHS settings over the last 12 years.
I currently work for the NHS on 2 days a week and in my private practice on 2 days (Mondays & Thursdays). I am very experienced in working with adults who are depressed, anxious, and/or angry. Clients have found it helpful to think about the underlying difficult experiences (in childhood and/or sometimes in adulthood) that have let to some of the feelings they are struggling with as change can not always be achieved unless we are ready to look at our pasts and unhelpful thinking and behavioural patterns that we have established over the years.
I find that sometimes we 'just' need a little help to unstuck some of these feelings so that a greater sense of ease and happiness can be felt (again). EMDR uses therapeutic strategies that have the power to 'unstuck' some of these blocked emotions, challenging unhelpful thinking habits that together with other (not so helpful) behaviours leave people in repeated cycles of gloom or a more persistent state of sadness, anxiety or anger.
I see mental health as being on a continuum of ill and 'well' health- am a strong believer that we are all equally brilliant (but simply start off our journeys at different points, or if you prefer the analogy; we are dealt 'different cards' in our childhoods through different genetic make-ups and different family constellations)- and I enjoy helping clients (re)establish a greater sense of well-being with themselves and others.
My professional qualifications have helped me develop into the therapist I am today - but the therapeutic relationship is absolutely key to achieving psychological change - hence I suggest that if you are interested in working with me we meet for an initial chat to see whether you can work with me and I can get a feeling for whether what I offer might be able to help you change (please keep in mind that change can be challenging and there are hardly ever any quick fixes for doing the (inner) work you need to do...).
