About me

Welcome to my page.

I understand there are times when we can all feel overwhelmed by lifes changes and very 'stuck'. However, I hold a strong belief that talking therapies are an especially useful tool for encouraging self-development on many different personal issues.

Individuals/Face-to-Face Therapy

Counselling provides uninterrupted space and time to talk about problems, concerns, thoughts and feelings. Being given the freedom to speak freely and honestly without fear of being judged is an important part of the therapeutic healing process.

I have a keen interest in  unresolved loss and bereavement in childhood and how this can impact on us emotionally in adulthood.

However, I counsel clients on a wide range of relationship issues from the trauma of domestic abuse through to depression and anxiety and have valuable experience in these areas.

Bereavement & Complex Loss

Bereavement and grief are natural responses to any form of loss. Whether that is the death of a loved one, or what we refer to as a ‘living loss’. Living losses can appear in different ways, such as the end of a relationship, being made redundant, retirement, moving home, friendship fallouts, the loss of our identity or even the loss of health – and can all cause emotional distress.

There is no set time limit to grieving. For some it is a work in progress, and it can take a long time to process the enormity of the loss and to reorganise a new life around it. A frequent statement in my office is “I’ve been told I should be over this by now” – if you can relate to this, be mindful of not falling into the trap of having your grief compared to someone else’s. Even if you are both experiencing the loss of the same person or situation you are both bringing your own experience and depth of emotion into the loss and both travelling at your own pace.

Remember, faster doesn’t mean better…

For many, bereavement is a very painful experience, but everyone will experience and identify with their loss differently and in ways unique to them.  Similarly, people ‘cope’ in different ways too.

For example, some people will want to feel heard and talk about their loss, whilst others may find solace and meaning within the ‘doing’ – for instance volunteering or fundraising for a charity.

Whilst some people can manage their grief on their own, or with the support of loved ones, others cannot, and if you feel that you are beginning to struggle, then it may be the right time to consider accessing therapy and providing yourself with the space to gently explore the difficulties and personal challenges surrounding your bereavement or sense of loss.

Relationship Therapy

The realisation that a relationship needs outside help can be a difficult obstacle to process in its own right. It takes real courage to raise our hands and admit that the connection we had, now feels broken, damaged or a shadow of what we once enjoyed.

Relationship therapy can be an effective way of creating a space where you can both feel heard, seen and listened to. In therapy, you will be invited to explore challenging aspects of your relationship and learn useful tools and techniques to help you navigate through difficult or complex areas of your relationship.

The ultimate goal of therapy is not always to keep a couple together in their relationship no matter what. Sometimes for a myriad of reasons, it is inevitable that a relationship will end. However, in these cases, therapy can provide a dynamic space where lines of communication are kept open and can be instrumental in helping the relationship reach a satisfactory conclusion and to ultimately ‘end well’.

In therapy an environment is cultivated which does not focus on blame, criticizing or reacting negatively towards each other, but instead encourages a space where misunderstandings can be explored, conflict can be reduced and empathy, understanding and a sense of re-connection can grow.

Qualifications and Experience
I have worked as a counsellor and psychotherapist in various clinical settings for over sixteen years and I currently operate an independent private practice where I offer therapy for both individuals and couples. Clients can contact me directly (self-refer), but I also take referrals from health professionals, EAP providers, occupational health and support charities. I also offer Clinical Supervision and personal therapy to other therapists and student counsellors.

I am a registered member of the BACP and offer both short term and long term therapy.

As a member of the BACP, I am bound by their strict Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions . I access regular clinical supervision in accordance with the BACP guidelines and stay professionally up to date with on-going Continued Professional Development programmes (CPD).

About my Practice
I run my private practice from an office within my home where it provides a quiet and calm space for clients to collect their thoughts and explore their feelings. The counselling room is situated at ground-floor level and there are no staircases to negotiate.

Initial Consultation
I offer the initial assessment and consultation free of charge with no obligation. Please allow up to 40 minutes for this appointment.

During this meeting a personal history is taken. Goals or objectives can be discussed and it gives my clients the opportunity to ask any questions they may have regarding the counselling process and determine how they feel about beginning counselling.

* Please note that couples seeking relationship therapy will be invited to attend their assessments separately.

Making an appointment is easy. Either telephone, or text on the number above, or alternatively send me an email and we can arrange a mutually suitable day and appointment time. I cannot always answer my phone immediately as I may be working with clients. If that is the case, then please leave a message with your name and contact details and I will return your call.

Parking
There is plenty of quiet off-road parking for clients, which is situated away from the main road.

My practice is situated within 5 minutes from Junction 31 of the M1 and is short walking distance of main bus routes from Sheffield, Rotherham, Worksop and North Nottinghamshire.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
