About me

Stop a moment.

Are you scrolling through a gallery of counsellors, therapists and psychotherapists, each with a bewildering array of specialities, ways of working, qualifications and a seemingly endless list of issues they work with?

It’s wonderful to have choice but too much choice can feel confusing and you may begin wondering whether you need counselling at all. Everything sounds so serious, for people with serious problems that only professionals can help with.

That’s not what counselling is about. Yes, we are professionals, yes we are all qualified (but do check that out – anyone can call themselves a counsellor, they won’t be breaking any laws), but beyond that how do you choose?

I suspect if you’re here then you’re possibly the sort of person that can be self-critical, you struggle to value yourself and your needs, and everyone else has more important issues to take to counselling.

Please believe me when I say that's just not true.

I know from experience that reading words such as depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, abuse, addiction can feel reassuring, but they can equally feel alienating. Have you really been abused? Traumatised? Are you depressed or just a bit low? Anxious or just worried? It is so common for clients to discount their own experiences. If you are here, looking at counsellor profiles then something isn't ok. And that's where we begin.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

I believe the person you are today is a mix of your core personality – likes, dislikes, skills, creativity, fitness, desires, morals, dreams – moulded by your life events.

Many people I see are unaware of just how their particular life journey has formed them – that’s just their ‘normal’. Others are all too aware of what they have been through, but believe the best they can hope for is learning how to manage their negative thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

That’s just not true. You can change how you feel.

I know through personal and professional experience that your anxiety, depression, rage, detachment, addictions are all coping strategies. You learned them, and you can un-learn them. And I can help you with that.
