Denise A Smith MA UKCP reg.
Asking for help takes courage and getting started can be the hardest part. Counselling works well for many people so I really encourage you to explore further what it has to offer. Being able to talk things through with a person trained to really listen and support you in finding your own solutions, without judging or coercing, can be helpful with a wide range of issues.
Modern life can be complex, demanding and potentially stressful. You may be struggling with a life choice, or a whole range of symptoms or issues in the present and / or issues from the past. This is when a trained and experienced professional outside your immediate networks can help. As a fully accredited, experienced Integrative Psychotherapist and Counsellor I have trained in a wide range of approaches so that I can respond appropriately to your unique needs as an individual. I maintain high standards of professional, ethical practice in all my work and am committed to ongoing training.
I offer a respectful, caring, creative yet safe and confidential time and space where we can explore what brings you to therapy now and find a way of working that suits your current needs and personal preferences. This can be shorter term work for those seeking practical ways forward, or more reflective, longer term, support.
For therapy to be successful I would support you to feel comfortable to speak openly and use the therapeutic conversation with me to help you find a way forward.
You are welcome to contact me by telephone or by email. This contact could lead to an introductory session, when we can meet face-to-face to see how we might get on together. This first session places you under no obligation. There really is no substitute for meeting before you make your decision about who you want to work with. This is why I offer this first session at a discounted rate.
My personal route into counselling / psychotherapy training began in 1990 by working as a volunteer with a national charity. I provided telephone support to individuals nationally and facilitated a local support group for 8 years, while working in a variety of health and social care settings in my paid employment. My formal therapy training at Masters level followed. The Minster Centre Masters programme involved six years of training and personal therapy. I am now an experienced and fully qualified therapist and supervisor working in private practice in North Hertfordshire.
I have worked with people of all ages and for varying lengths of time in a variety of settings. This support has included people with ongoing health issues, complex needs and difficulties. When employed as a Youth Worker with Hertfordshire County Council I worked with young people aged between 14 and 25.
I am currently registered to work as a psychotherapist and counsellor with adults (age 18 and above) with the UKCP (The United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy), accredited by The Minster Centre (London). I can be located on the "Find a Therapist" pages on the websites for both the UKCP and The Minster Centre.
Since 2012 I have trained in and fully integrated an advanced post-graduate training called AIT (Advanced Integrative Therapy) within my work with clients. This is an approach that integrates re-balancing the bodies energy system with traditional talking therapeutic work. Clinical and anecdotal evidence shows this integration of approaches is a very powerful, yet gentle way of relieving stress and dealing with trauma.
