About me

-     Over 25 years experience of youth and community work in the voluntary sector.

-     In 2014 I was elected to the Board of Trustees of YPI (Young People's Independent Counselling) in
Basingstoke. Prior to this, I had a two year placement as a volunteer counsellor for YPI.

-     I have worked at a secondary school in South London, at the Oakridge Young People's Project
(employed by the Childrens' Society), and also the Whitchurch Activities Project.

-     My work with women experiencing postnatal depression is very important to me and I trained as a
Postnatal Illness Support Group Coordinator for the Basingstoke branch of the National
Childbirth Trust (and have over 15 year's experience in this role).

-     I hold a current DBS check, hold professional indemnity insurance and am registered under the Data
Protection Act as a Data Controller

I help people in four different areas:-

Mental Health Issues
Including Anxiety and Stress, Depression, Dementia and Alzheimer's (a form of dementia)

Young Peoples' Issues
Including Self-harm, Bullying, Lack of confidence, Domestic or sexual abuse

Bereavement and Loss
Death of a family member, friend or loved one, progressive diseases or conditions, facing end of life situations

Pregnancy and Parenting
Post-Natal Depression, Baby-loss, Pregnancy choices, Miscarriage

My approach

I am an 'integrative' counsellor. This means I work flexibly as best suits your needs. I integrate Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with the Person-Centred Approach (PCA) and a newer type of therapy called Internal Family Systems (IFS).

In my experience, PCA is the best starting point for most clients. PCA allows you, the client, to explore your own feelings and reach your own solutions. I enable this to happen by providing the correct conditions, and by working with whatever you bring into the counselling room. There is no fixed agenda prior to the sessions. You may find this style of working extremely liberating, particularly if you have never had the time and space to simply be yourself with somebody with whom you can build a trusting relationship. Many people experience relationship issues and believe it or not, this is normal because it mirrors life in general. What is important is how we respond and, in turn, how we cope. This is where I can help.

CBT is far more prescriptive and you will be given 'homework' to supplement the counselling between sessions. In my experience, CBT can be particularly effective for mild to medium depression (more so than PCA). It can also be effective for the earlier stages of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

In respect of IFS, this type of therapy can have a profound effect and should not be used early on in therapy. Sometimes we move on to using and IFS approach if it is felt to be appropriate.

I work from a private counselling room where I am able to help you on an individual basis. I can help you explore your feelings at a deep and personal level, confidentially and without judgement.

I understand the importance of simply listening to people who feel that no-one is listening or understands their problems.

By working together, we can create an environment in which you feel comfortable about talking openly about whatever you need to, as and when you feel comfortable to do so.

Together we can then identify the most appropriate and realistic approach that best suits your needs. I offer short and long-term support.

Before making a commitment, you are invited to attend an initial assessment (lasting up to 50 minutes). This is charged at half the normal fee and costs £25 (cash preferred). This assessment will help identify the main issues and we can agree the initial number and frequency of the sessions required.

Feedback from clients is that they value having time to explore their feelings in peaceful surroundings. I have many butterflies in my room (not real ones!), since I believe that a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis is emblematic of the transition clients can make in counselling - ending with the freedom to fly free,

Further information

Part of Harmony's business is to offer talks and training presentations for organisations. Recent talks have been on 'grieving and guilt' and 'understanding stress'. Future talks booked are on 'communication' and 'how we counsel clients who have dementia'.

This year I am delighted to have a colleague working with me as Harmony grows. Her name is Sam, and it may be appropriate for you to see Sam. Sam works solely with clients who are bereaved. A decision will be made at upon initial assessment.

I have many business and networking colleagues within the Basingstoke area. As Harmony develops, I am spending much more time supporting young mothers dealing with family issues, relationship problems, post-natal depression and anxiety. I having a working partnership with The Safe Basingstoke Limited where we support those who are experiencing Domestic Violence, families, and those facing an unintended pregnancy.

If I can be of any help to you, or you would like to join our growing team of volunteers and supporters, please do get in touch.
