About me

Welcome to The Changing Room

Do you need help to Change your life for the better? As a fully qualified BACP Registered Counsellor with of over 20 years experience I provide sensitive, confidential therapy to individuals and couples of all ages.

I understand that deciding to come for counselling can be a big step and choosing the right person to work with may seem daunting, especially when you are feeling  stuck or overwhelmed by life events. You may be feeling anxious about what to expect, but there is really no need to worry as I aim to make your experience as positive as possible.

To help you decide whether I can be of help I offer all my clients a free initial consultation so you can find out more about what to expect or perhaps share your initial thoughts, feelings, and talk about the difficulties you are experiencing.

My ethos as a therapist is one of empathic collaboration, to help on your path towards clarity and change. Together we can start to make links and see patterns in your life enabling you to resolve the issues that are affecting your emotional well being and find practical steps to empower you to move forward.

I specialise in Integrative Counselling, which means, I believe there are a number of different approaches to counselling. I understand that no one person or couple are the same, that different problems require different solutions, no single theory sufficient and I adapt my approach accordingly. I recognise you are unique.

Today you have taken the first important step.

So, what do my clients say about their experience?

Anxiety

'My G.P recommended CBT for my anxiety. I was having regular panic attacks and my anxiety was affecting pretty much every area of my life. Debbie helped me work through my negative thought patterns and helped me see that it was my way of thinking that was the issue, and that the years of always thinking the worst could be over, that I had the power to change my life. I no longer suffer from panic and feel that I now have a real handle on my way of thinking. No more, I'm not good enough.'

Depression

'At first I was nervous about the thought of coming for counselling but soon was put at ease. Having someone to talk to and be open without any judgement was lovely. I thought it was good that I could talk about anything. And I liked the fact that I wasn't told what to do but was given the help and encouragement to realise the direction that was right for me.'

Phobias

'The conversations we had around unpicking my thought process behind the fear was so helpful. This is probably what I found most challenging but was also most effective and something I’ve found I’ve been able to work on on my own as well as in the sessions. The coping mechanisms for anxiety were also really helpful, you actually gave me a bit of a reality check in the sense that you can’t rid anxiety all together but can at least work at coping with it.

You were an absolute pleasure to visit, you made me feel extremely comfortable and I always felt like I could talk to you about anything. Thank you so much you’ve really given me my summers back!'

Relationships

'We felt having a space to talk in that was safe and supportive was really helpful. The sessions were very well managed and structured and there was an understanding and empathy with our situation which felt comforting.  We were each allowed a decent time to talk and reflect.

Thank you Debbie – you were very kind and understanding and we really appreciated the lack of judgement and desire to help us with your reflections and ideas'

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
