UKCP/BACP Couple/Group/Individual Psychotherapist/Supervisor

About me

I am a highly trained, qualified and accredited Clinical Psychotherapist, Counsellor, Supervisor and Trainer and work with individuals, couples and groups. I have extensive experience, having practised for over 23 years in the London and now the Derbyshire area. I am trained as a Transactional Analyst (a humanistic therapy) and Cognitive behavioural group therapist. I have undertaken specialist training in a number of other areas, which includes EMDR, Mindfulness and Solution Focussed therapy, Couple Therapy and CBT. I combine a number of approaches and work with clients in a way which will best facilitate their end. I would describe my overall approach as relational and Integrative.

I have extensive experience of working with a range of issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma (including PTSD), bereavement, abuse, violence and anger management, conflict, childhood issues, relationship difficulties, fertility, affair and betrayals, divorce and separation, parenting problems and autonomy, both in long term and short term therapy.

I work part time in private practice and part time for other organisations. Over the last 12 years this has been with the NHS, Care Agencies, Charities (NSPCC), Education Authorities and with-in the criminal justice system. I currently hold an Associate Trainers post and teach Psychotherapy at masters level on a University accredited course.
It is essential that you feel comfortable and safe with the therapist or counsellor. To help you decide if I am the right person for you I offer a free 55 minute consultation session. During this time, you can get to know a little bit about me and how I work; it will also give me the opportunity to understand your reasons for seeking help and support. I have a private comfortable therapy room on the ground floor of my property.

I am available from Monday to Friday (excluding Wednesdays) and also have limited spaces at a weekend.

There is ample free parking outside and I can be easily accessed via the A38. I am also on a bus route so it is possible to get to me by public transport.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

SUPERVISION PROFILE - I provide supervision for counselling and psychotherapy. I work with therapists beginning out on their first counselling/psychotherapy placement to very experienced counsellors and psychotherapists.

Purpose of Supervision - I believe that supervision needs to take place in a safe and supportive environment where all parties can explore the counselling/psychotherapy process between the counsellor/psychotherapist and the client in an open and honest way. The aim is to assess the needs of the client and explore ways of working that would be of most benefit to them. It is a place where the supervisee can develop themselves as a therapist and get support. It is designed to ensure professional standards are being met and that the supervisee is working within the Ethical Guidelines for Good Practise in Counselling and Psychotherapy.I endeavour to create an environment of openness, honesty, support and respect, where power is shared. I will always attempt to work from an I’m Ok, You’re Ok place and challenge from this place.

Further information

Helping you decide what you want from my services:-

Individual Psychotherapy & Counselling allows you the time and space to understand the questions you have and the situation in which you find yourself. The therapeutic relationship will provide you with the opportunity to explore aspects of yourself in a safe, confidential and professional environment with a person who will not judge your views, actions or thoughts. I will give productive feedback, share my thoughts and feelings where appropriate and provide the right environment so you can learn and make positive and lasting change.

Couples Psychotherapy & Counselling allows you and your partner to look at how you communicate, interact, problem solve and negotiate in your relationship. It is helpful to explore the difference between you, the way you deal with situations and how your individual histories and experiences can affect your relationship. By working in a couple the focus of the therapy is on the relationship and what you want as a couple to achieve together.

Group Psychotherapy and Counselling provides and opportunity to explore aspects of yourself and your relationship in a group setting. Group experience often provides immediate and live material for useful therapeutic work. I currently run a group which meets once every fortnight for 2.30 hours.

Transactional Analysis counselling belongs to the Psychoanalytical School of therapy and was devised by Eric Berne a Canadian psychiatrist in the late 1940’s.  Berne wanted to develop a therapy which was easier for the general public to understand, using ‘Layman’s terms’. TA can best be introduced by a quote from one of its most popular books, 'TA Today': "Transactional analysis is a theory of personality and a systematic psychotherapy for personal growth and personal change'. (ITAA). Among psychological approaches, transactional analysis is outstanding in the depth of its theory and the wide variety of its applications. As a theory of personality, TA gives us a picture of how people are structured psychologically. TA helps us understand how people function - how they express their personality in terms of behaviour, thoughts and feelings.  TA also provides a theory of communication. This can be extended to give a method of analysing relational dynamics.

EMDR Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a powerful psychotherapy technique which has been very successful in helping people who suffer from trauma, anxiety, panic, disturbing memories, post traumatic stress and many other emotional problems. EMDR is considered a breakthrough therapy because of its simplicity and the fact that it can bring quick and lasting relief for most types of emotional distress. EMDR is the most effective and rapid method for healing PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) as shown by extensive scientific research studies.
