About me

Hello, my name is Dawn Preston,

Are you feeling unhappy and would like to explore a talking therapy as a pathway to finding an enhanced feeling of well being and self fulfillment?

I am a professionally qualified counsellor and a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I practice within the guidelines of the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice.

I am an integrative counsellor, specialising in working with adults and older adults. I offer face to face private counselling to clients from my office in Chester-le-Street. I help people who find themselves in a difficult place share their situation and thoughts in a safe, caring and confidential environment.

I genuinely understand that taking the first step to connecting with counselling  can feel very daunting. I would like to reassure you that if you would like to call or message me for an initial informal chat to discuss your needs, I ensure you that I will offer you warmth, care and regard from the first moment of our connection.

To get started with exploring the option of therapy with me, all you have to do is  call, message or email, then we can set up an initial chat or session; where we can talk about how you are feeling and what you want from counselling.

If you are happy to continue we can set up another session and arrange a cycle of meetings that fits your needs, that you feel happy with, perhaps weekly or fortnightly.

Training, qualifications & experience

I qualified as a person-centred counsellor in 2013 and since then I have worked in a range of settings, including a sexual and domestic violence organisation, an IAPT service working with GP client referrals, HM Prisons and a secondary school.  Additionally, I have experience in working with people with special educational needs and disabilities, and within a mental health crisis team. I also continue to seek and engage with further professional development and ongoing relevant research and training.

My approach to counselling is integrative which means that I draw on other therapeutic approaches when appropriate and helpful for the client. However, person-centred counselling is at the heart of my therapy as this embodies the empathy, congruence and non-judgemental nature of the counselling that I offer to my clients.

Member organisations

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.

Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.

All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
