About me

Dave Petch, MSc, BSc (Hons) AP APM MBACP (Registered)

Hello! If you’ve made it this far and onto my profile, then you’ve taken a massive step for yourself and that should be commended! So a little bit about me then and how work.

I like to work relationally with my clients, putting emphasis on the therapeutic relationship, which in my eyes is a major determining factor in the outcomes of my client’s treatment.  My clients are made to feel relaxed and with my easy-going approach I hope that therapy with myself is on the most part an enjoyable experience. Obviously at times therapy can feel difficult, but I hope that therapy with myself is made a little easier. I don’t use jargon, or pointless filler and fill spaces with ‘’ummms’’, ‘’hmmmm interesting’’ and the biggen ‘’so how does that make you feel’’.  I am just me in the therapy room and I feel that my clients appreciate this.

The experiences we have early in our lives can often impact our view of the world and ourselves as adults. We may place unhealthy expectations on ourselves or view ourselves in an overly negative light. I can offer you a safe, compassionate and non-judgemental environment in which I can help you to achieve the goals you set yourself at the start of our journey together.

I am a fully qualified integrative counsellor and psychotherapist and a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and of the Addiction Professionals Registration Body and Network (AP APM) and as such, abide by their ethical framework and principles. I attend regular and ongoing professional supervision and training to ensure I am up to date, both with current practices and ethical standards.

As an integrative psychotherapist I have trained within three different modalities; Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Attachment Theory and Person-Centred Therapy. However, I also utilise techniques from other schools of counselling such as Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Gestalt Therapy and Schema Therapy. This allows me to specifically tailor the most effective course of counselling for you.

I offer both short term counselling or long-term psychotherapy to individuals over 16 years of age.

Addiction Specialist

Although I can work with a wide range of presenting issues my specialist area is working with addiction, both substances and behavioural. In addition to my private practice, I have worked in several substance misuse and alcohol services in Derby, helping individuals make the transition from addiction into recovery.

I have worked in an aftercare service in Derby, helping with the maintenance of recovery and relapse prevention, for people that have recently left an addictions treatment centre or detox unit. I have been working within the addictions field for the last eight years and have particular interest in working with substance misuse and addiction issues and also clients who may be struggling in their recovery.

As well as my private practice I currently work for the mental health charity MIND and am subcontracted to the NHS in a non – IAPT counselling role. I also worked for a homeless project in Derby City centre called Safe Space, delivering counselling sessions to entrenched rough sleepers. Within SafeSpace I also worked on a project called ByMySide delivering bespoke training to the staff on the project and also counselling to entrenched rough sleepers suffering from addictions.

I have also worked for various counselling services within Derby city centre, working with clients presenting with a wide range of mental health issues and also specifically working in a service for clients presenting with eating disorders.

I am an advanced practitioner of the Addiction Professionals Registration Body and Network (AP APM).

I have experience and knowledge surrounding several different models of addiction treatment and believe there is no one size fits all when it comes to recovery. Everybody’s journey is subjective to them and I can help you to find what works for you.

Testimonials

“Dave was really good and helped me through my time of struggle, with a friendly approach to the sessions it made me feel comfortable and made it easier to share which allowed an easier more comfortable way of therapy. Best therapist could have asked for.”
Male Client Age 20’s

”The first national coronavirus lockdown to a huge toll on my mental health. I had slipped back into negative thinking patterns and behaviours and was developing a serious issue with drinking and drugs. With Dave’s guidance, I am now clean and sober and have tools to stay that way and withstand the personal and professional challenges lockdown #2 will inevitably present. I would like to take this chance to thank Dave for his invaluable support and wish him all the best for the future. ”
Male Client Age 30’'

“Dave was very personable to begin with and it helped as we went along this counselling journey, we had a lot of similar interests which helped forged a good relationship. I felt Dave asked the right questions to get me to think and reflect alongside recommending some very helpful tools that will assist me moving forward on my journey of self-improvement. The best thing about Dave was, I did not feel judged at all or that he came across in a judgmental way. Thanks Dave, for the support and for listening, I’ve taken a lot away and I feel more confident that I have the tools at my disposal to deal with situations better.”
Male Client Age 40’s

“Dave Petch has been an excellent support and guide over the past weeks. He was able to get me to see and approach my anxiety in new ways. The meetings were always with purpose, and I felt I left each meeting with positive actions.”

“Best decision I’ve made in my adult life. These seemingly small issues that were once troubling me have now been eradicated. Thanks to David, his patience with me and helping me to explore why I felt badly about myself, I’ve changed my thinking. I’ve never felt so sure that I can be confident in who I am. I will be forever grateful for this experience and for David’s help and support. Even though he says that ‘It’s been me’ that’s done the work, that is not true! He’s been an incredible listener and said some things that will always stick with me. I would recommend counselling to anyone who is suffering – whether it is big or small issues”

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
