About me
Hello and thank you for taking the time to look at my details
As my web site reflects (www.davidmugridgecounselling.co.uk), I have first and foremost a very simple view of counselling – it is about two human beings being together and in a deep contact with each other. Two equals seeking an understanding of what is going on for you at this moment in your life. At your pace. Respectfully. With kindness and humility, providing a safe and reflective space, promoting your change and growth as you need
I have a fundamental belief in all of my clients to both pace themselves and make choice even if at times this seems some distance away. This the power of the enduring human spirit (you would not even be reading this if not)
Anxiety, Depression, Loss of Identity, Self-Worth, Stress
Anxiety and depression are symptoms of something else - consequences of the pressures, shocks and traumas of life; learnt 'safety' and coping responses, often including avoidance, withdrawal and other self-protective measures. And simply not living 'as I truly am', being what I think others need - this alone can cause low mood and depression
If you need a compassionate and attuned counsellor to 'walk by your side' during your counselling, work ethically and to your pace and direction, then I can be that therapist with you
My Services
I currently offer counselling via online video and also by phone
How I Work
I undertake an assessment with you first to clarify the nature of our work and check that ethically we are well suited together.
Beyond that, we will complete a contract together. This is to allow us to agree the nature, boundaries and your direction of our work.
My training means we can work through talking (narrative), imagery, visualisation, as well as other creative and interactive means too. You will always be in charge of these options (I will fully support you to in the control of the direction and pace of this)
My Work Experience
I have worked for 7 years in the NHS as a counsellor. I have also worked (voluntarily) for 9 years in a hospice including 2 years as a counsellor and 5 years in a separate cancer charity as a counsellor.
I am an experienced, registered member of the BACP (British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists) and I abide by their Ethical Framework
Training, qualifications & experience
Counselling Qualifications
Diploma in Humanistic Integrative Counselling (Wealden Psychology Institute) - a BACP accredited qualification
BACP Accreditation (an additional higher level professional developmental qualification) described by BACP - "accreditation demonstrates to clients and employers that you have achieved high standards of knowledge, experience and development"
Person-Centred Experiential Counselling for Depression (PcE-CfD for short) (described by BACP as an "intensive top up course for qualified therapists with in depth knowledge of person-centred and humanistic counselling theory"). It is a modality oriented to working closely with an emotion focus
Member organisations
school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
