About me

Many of us at some point in our lives find things hard going and don't always have the support we may wish for. Counselling can offer you the opportunity to talk to someone who is trained neither to judge or advise. I genuinely believe that counselling can enable a person to gain a greater understanding of themselves. My role as your counsellor would be to create the basis of a helping relationship which is safe and supportive . Taking that first step in deciding to meet with a counsellor can be daunting that's true but it is very often the beginning of a positive change for the better in someone's life .

If you feel that counselling support is something that may be of help at this point in your life , please feel free to contact me and I will do my very best to help you to help yourself .
A few background facts about me . I am from a teaching background initially but have experience working with the Samaritans in the Wakefield area and with the bereavement organisation CRUSE . I have worked as a mental health counsellor in the voluntary sector mostly with NHS clients and also in private practice .

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a Certificate in Education and my counselling qualifications are a Certificate in Counselling Skills in 2002 and Diploma in Counselling in 2004. I have been a professional mental health counsellor for nineteen years working with adults between the ages of 18 and 72 . I have a particular interest in working with adults who have been diagnosed with depression and with anxiety and it has been my experience that these two conditions are often related . I also have an interest in relationship difficulties and people who often use the counselling experience as a medium to find out more about themselves .
The counselling approach is called Person - Centred . It is one of the most widely used counselling approaches in the world . The approach views the client as being the expert in their life . The therapist is someone who attempts to facilitate change in the client . It is a relationship therapy . The better the relationship between the counsellor and the client , then the more likelihood the reality of positive change in the client . This coupled with a GENUINE wanting to change on the behalf of the client are the two main ingredients for change .

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy . The BACP is one of the leading counselling organisations in Britain . Counsellors on the BACP register show a commitment to safe , ethical practice .

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
