About me

Working with individuals and couples/relationships. Face to face where possible, online occasionally or outdoors in natural surrounding close to Todmorden train station. I prefer to meet in person, if possible. However I am experienced in online/safe distance alternatives and have found them to be effective.

Counsellor and therapist practising in Todmorden and Hebden Bridge.

Professional, confidential, creative and empathic service.

BACP registered for your assurance and safety (membership number 172635).

Fully trained Integrative Counsellor.

I have many years experience of working with people and groups of all ages from childhood to old age, people with autistic spectrum conditions and learning disabilities, families and carers, students and trainees. I see individual and couples/people in various types of relationship. This can include brief therapy or working in depth; working creatively to find relief, ease or solutions.

I enjoy learning and continue to attend peer learning and professional training events. Some recent extra trainings include:

Working outdoors with The Center for Natural Reflection. (See my website for more details.)

Working with couples - Leeds center for psychological development.

Working with conflict in Groups - London Gestalt Center.

Working with Group Dynamics - London Gestalt Center.

I work from Todmorden and Hebden bridge; both spacious, welcoming spaces where clients have room to express themselves, reflect and explore. As part of our therapeutic conversation we might also choose to use drawing, imaginative play, physical movement... or a combination of approaches. We can also use the nearby outdoor spaces, which can significantly change the type and manner of conversation between us. Many people find that working outdoors to be very effective.

The Hebden space is centrally located, with wheelchair access, via an elevator.

I can also use a large hall in Todmorden with no steps, but no adapted/disabled friendly toilets.

Training, qualifications & experience

Diploma in Transactional Analysis/ Integrative counselling (5 years).
Certificate in Psychodrama.
BA hons, Creative Arts.
Certificate in relationships/couples therapy with Leeds Center for Phychological Development.

Training in eco-therapy with the center for Natural reflection.

Trainings in autism, working with children, hearing voices... and more.

30 years experience in collaborative arts and wellbeing projects with individuals and groups.

My training covers several approaches including behavioural work, relational styles and action methods. I always work from a non-judgmental view and seek to enable rather than direct. Together we can look for the best way to navigate through your current problems.

My style is based in respect and compassion, also using humour and creativity.
Clear communication and clear boundaries are helpful to this work. You and I would discuss the formal aspects of counselling/therapy and what you hope to achieve, leaving a clear space for imaginative and emotional work.

Having worked as a professional musician and artist for many years I feel well suited to understand the needs of self-employed and creative people.

6 years accredited therapist training.

6 years working with Respect for All specialist counselling service for people with Autistic Spectrum Conditions and their families/carers.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Further information

My approach to counselling is collaborative, sensitive, non-judgemental and creative. We work together to understand what may be holding you back or making you uncomfortable, distressed or ill..

Our conversations are confidential*.

I use an Integrative and active method which aims to bring together or integrate parts of you that are in conflict. It also requires you to be active and involved in exploring your issues. Therapy is not done to you, it happens with you. It is more like a guided process of knowing oneself that leads to where you want to be.

We can also utilise creative and non-verbal activities to enhance your explorations, if it feels right for you. So our conversation could also include writing, role play, music or body awareness work... if appropriate. Some of this can be achieved through online or telephone work too. These approaches can help us to communicate on a deeper level than just talking, or can give you access to the elusive language of feelings or the realms of your subconscious.

I aim to support diverse beliefs and lifestyles and would like to support people from challenging backgrounds to assert their rights and achieve their goals. I also have many years experience of working with people with learning disabilities and Autistic Spectrum Conditions, to help them to express themselves and to take control of their life choices.
Parents and carers can also benefit from counselling or therapy with someone who understands these pressures and stresses.

*I work with 2 clinical supervisors to keep my practise as safe and efficient as possible. You would remain anonymous in those conversations.

You are welcome to come/call for a 30min assessment, for £10, to discuss what concerns you and how we might work together. We can then make an informed decision together about wether to proceed.

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

The space in Hebden is wheelchair accessible via a lift. In Todmorden I use a ground floor hall with no steps. Toilets are not adapted for accessibility. Todmorden station has steps. I have extensive experience of working with people with disabilities.
