Cressida Ellis Integrative Psychotherapist (BACP Accredited) & EMDR Therapist
Are you feeling alienated from your family and friends, and that nobody really understands you? Are you struggling with a particular issue such as stress, anxiety, relationship problems, an addiction or depression? Or maybe you are feeling that you have lost your sense of direction and life feels overwhelming and confusing? I can help you to gain insight into the emotional problems and difficulties that might be preventing you from having a really fulfilling life and a greater sense of self.
I have an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Therapy and am an accredited member of The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, and adhere to their ethical guidelines.
I work with both adults and children, with a whole range of challenges and issues, as well as offering specialist experience in substance addictions such as alcoholism or compulsive overeating and behavioural addictions like sex and love addiction and co-dependency.
I use a variety of specific tools to help people deal with anxiety, which is an area I am very interested in, as I used to suffer from it in my twenties, so I know how debilitating it can be.
I've also undertaken Cognitive Behavioural Therapy training which I use in a client centred way to specifically address anxiety disorders, depression, OCD, substance abuse and eating disorders.
I am also a qualified EMDR therapist ; EMDR is a very powerful and effective way of processing all kinds of traumatic memories and experiences in a shorter time than traditional talking therapies, or can also can be used as part of a longer process.
As well as working the last five years with adults in an agency setting, I have my own private practice in Hove. I have worked as a counsellor in primary schools, in addition to working with adults and adolescents in my private practice.
Working on myself, with the help of a good therapist, completely transformed my life, so when I advise my clients that therapy has the potential to help them change; I’m speaking through personal first hand experience. It helped me to find a more fulfilling and happy path in life, to accept myself and grow as a person. I chose the same type of therapy to train in, as I have absolute faith in its life changing potential.
How can counselling/therapy help you?
Integrative therapy consists of a wide range of different therapeutic techniques, as there is no single approach that can treat a client in all situations. I usually use a combination of different approaches as each of us is individual, and the integrative outlook provides therapy that is tailored to meet your specific needs.
My approach will help you to
- See how the past is impacting on your present and how it affects the way you think, feel and behave now
- Explore and overcome anxieties about the future
- Find greater meaning and purpose in your life.
Clearly professional qualifications and experience are important, but I also place great value on the healing qualities of the relationship between client and therapist. Therapy is a collaborative process and I believe that building trust, feeling understood and in charge of decision and choice making within the process are all key aspects of the counselling journey for clients. Developing a unique working partnership with each individual client and using this to help them overcome their struggles is at the heart of my work.

I also have worked at Dialogue Counselling Services for Schools and Colleges, where I counselled primary school children using play therapy and art therapy.
I also offer specialist experience in substance addictions such as alcoholism or compulsive overeating and behavioural addictions like sex and love addiction and co-dependency. I have attended workshops and talks on addiction, codependency, working with trauma, amongst others, led by experts in these fields.
Before working in this field, I had a career in media in London based agencies, so I know how it can feel to work in a pressurised and demanding work environment.
I have also done courses in mindfulness meditation, and I now practice meditation in my daily life. This helps to bring a more holistic approach to my therapeutic work.
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
